Commercial pedestrian blocks play an indispensable role in urban life. With the development of urban commercial intensification, the construction of commercial pedestrian blocks has ushered in a period of rapid development. To explore the spatial form and structural features of commercial pedestrian blocks, we examined the Qingniwa-Tianjin Street commercial pedestrian block in Dalian, China. We developed a new quantitative research method, using Isovist-App software simulation, big data statistics and Arc GIS analysis methods to explore the spatial morphological structure characteristics of commercial districts. The results show that Tianjin Street’s pedestrian axis has low spatial permeability and monotonous browsing routes. This suggests that the outdoor pedestrian space design does not attract crowds to wander around and stroll. The overall centrality of the space was relatively high, and the spatial accessibility was good. The walking route provided a wide field of vision, stimulating people’s desire for exploration. The space is highly guided, and people can visit according to the designed route. There is a big difference in the spatial aggregation and dispersion of POI facilities. Transportation, sports, and leisure facilities are the most evenly distributed, while shopping and life service street facilities vary considerably. During holidays, the intensity and duration of crowd activities are the largest, followed by working days and weekends. The people in the block mainly gather in the western and southern commercial complexes, and the attractiveness of outdoor pedestrian streets is lower than that of commercial complexes. Node space B has pedestrian streets with varying spatial interfaces and inconsistent visual appeal. The results can be used to support the spatial form and structural renewal design of commercial pedestrian blocks. The methods presented in this study provide a quantitative approach for the spatial analysis of other functional areas in the city.

Public space scenes are being transformed by virtual reality (VR) technology, offering immersive and interactive experiences that redefine how people engage with their surroundings. Through VR simulations, users can explore and interact with virtual public spaces in ways that were previously impossible. From virtual parks and plazas to digital replicas of iconic landmarks, VR technology allows users to experience the ambiance and atmosphere of public spaces from the comfort of their own homes. Moreover, VR enables designers and planners to experiment with different layouts, amenities, and features, facilitating participatory design processes and community engagement. This paper presents a visual design and evaluation framework for public space scenes using virtual reality (VR) technology, enhanced by Virtual Parallel Edge Hashing Computing (VPE-HC). The framework aims to optimize the design and user experience of public spaces by leveraging VR technology to create immersive and interactive simulations. Through simulated experiments and empirical validations, the effectiveness of the VPE-HC-enhanced VR-based design and evaluation process is evaluated. Results demonstrate significant improvements in user satisfaction, engagement, and usability compared to traditional design methods. For instance, users interacting with public space scenes designed using VPE-HC reported a 40% increase in perceived safety and a 25% improvement in overall satisfaction ratings. Additionally, the framework enabled designers to optimize spatial layouts and amenities based on real-time user feedback and performance data, leading to more effective and user-centric design solutions. These findings underscore the potential of VPE-HC in enhancing the visual design and evaluation of public space scenes based on VR technology, facilitating more inclusive and user-friendly urban environments.

The significance of nightlife and the nighttime economy has witnessed a growing prominence in the realm of urban development. The urban nightlife landscape, serving as the backdrop for urban nighttime pursuits, plays a significant role in determining nighttime consumption patterns and overall nocturnal experiences. However, there is a significant lacuna in the existing scholarship on the fundamental reasoning behind the formation of nightlife landscapes, with the primary analytical focus in earlier studies on daytime landscapes. Drawing upon a spatiotemporal geography perspective, this paper aims to uncover the underlying logic behind the various forms of urban nightlife landscapes. It seeks to identify the key factors that shape these landscapes, thus unveiling their formation mechanisms, overall typology and aesthetic characteristics. Based on the cases of four bar streets in Guangzhou, China, this study argues that the historical heritage and location advantages give rise to two developmental forces in shaping the nightlife landscape: romanticisation and commercialisation. The intertwining of these two forces results in four fundamental categories of urban nightlife landscape: ordinary leisure, gentrification, creative and nostalgic districts, each exhibiting distinct aesthetic characteristics. This paper provides insights into the formation and aesthetic mechanisms of urban nightlife landscapes, and emphasises the importance for urban planners and policymakers to take the spatial-historical context into account when formulating strategies for urban beatification initiatives.
