Torsional stiffness of a rotary table plays an important role in the static and dynamic characteristics of a rotary feed drive system. This paper proposes an effective approach to estimate the torsional stiffness of a worm geared transmission usually employed in rotary table. First, the stiffness models of each component used in the transmission are extracted. Then, an expression for the coefficient relating angular displacements is derived and a general torsional stiffness model for the rotary feed drive is developed, taking the time-varying mesh stiffness into account. Finally, a stiffness test scheme is presented and conducted to verify the proposed stiffness model. Furthermore, the influences of the gear's parameters on the resultant torsional stiffness are investigated based on the developed model. Results indicate the necessity to incorporate a time-varying mesh stiffness when the torsional stiffness of the rotary table is under estimation. Also, a highfrequency variation in profile of torsional stiffness is induced by the mesh stiffness of gear pairs at the high-speed stage. Parametric studies show that tooth width and number of teeth of the driven gear at low-speed stage are more sensitive to stiffness than those at high-speed stage. However, the number of teeth of the driving gears introduces different effects onto the torsional stiffness. The presented model can be used to estimate the torsional stiffness of a rotary feed system efficiently, especially during the preliminary design stage.

A novel magnetorheological (MR) hydrostatic guideway system for control of machining vibration is proposed. After the analysis of the relationship between correlation parameters and working variables, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is presented. With this model incorporated into the commercial code FLUENT, a numerical study on performance parameters of MR hydrostatic guideway system is carried out efficiently. Static stiffness and damping coefficients are calculated by using dynamic mesh technique based on perturbation theory. Analysis on dynamic behaviors of the MR hydrostatic guideway under the action of machining force is performed. An experimental study has been undertaken in order to validate the accuracy of the numerical model. It is observed that working variables (magnetic flux density, initial pressure ratio and load ratio) have significant effects on the performance characteristics (flow rate, frictional force, stiffness and damping) of the system. Optimal static stiffness and high damping can be expected simultaneously. Dynamic stiffness of the system can be improved and vibration caused by machining force can be reduced remarkably by increasing magnetic flux density. It is effective to control machining vibration by applying MR hydrostatic guideway system.

Torsional stiffness of a rotary feed drive system not only has great influence on the rotary positioning accuracy, but also affects the system dynamic characteristics. This paper proposes an estimating approach for the torsional stiffness of typical transmission chains in rotary feed drive tables. Firstly, a general analytical torsional stiffness model is presented, taking torsional stiffness of shafts and meshing stiffness between gear teeth into account. Then, general expressions of coefficients in the model relating adjacent angular displacements in the typical transmission chains are derived under static equilibrium condition. Moreover, a torsional stiffness test experiment is conducted for a rotary drive table and the stiffness estimation algorithm is presented. To verify the validity of the proposed approach, comparisons among the traditional model, finite element model and the proposed one are made. The results show that the stiffness value obtained from traditional model is bigger than the presented analytical model. The finite element analysis and experimental results indicate the analytical model is valid and more accurate than the traditional ones. This work provides an effective and general way to estimate the torsional stiffness of typical transmissions employed in rotary table of machine tools during the system design and characteristic analysis process.
