In the unit-load warehouse (UW) design, the aisle design problem dealing with storage space layout is the first among the three main problems. Several conventional and non-conventional designs have been proposed in the literature. In general, the assessment of UW designs is commonly carried out using analytical approaches. However, such an approach may be inadequate due to assumptions or approximations, making results unrealistic. Aiming to bridge this gap, this research develops an assessment framework that employs the FlexSim software for simulating the conventional, Flying-V and Fishbone designs based on a real case from a Philippine manufacturing company. Using a computer simulation, this research investigates factors not yet tractable with present analytical methods. The factors employed for the comparative assessment are “picking run-time”, “travel distance”, and “capacity”. The results suggest that the Fishbone design provides the most advantage compared to the Flying-V and other conventional designs. With the proposed Fishbone design, the company is expected to save, on average, 52.39% of picking run-time, 32.25% travel distance, and increase storage capacity by 7.5%. The research findings are compared to previous studies based on analytical approaches.

ÖzOtomatik Depolama ve Geri-Alma (OD/GA) sistemleri için kurulum aşamasında performans analizlerinin yapılması sistem tasarımının optimize edilmesi açısından önemlidir. Bununla birlikte, OD/GA sistemlerinin tasarımı gerçekleştirilirken, fiziksel tasarım parametrelerine ek olarak kontrol parametrelerinin de dikkate alınması gerekliliği karmaşık bir optimizasyon probleminin ortaya çıkmasına neden olmaktadır. Bu problemin ele alınmasında farklı parametre kombinasyonlarını içerecek şekilde esnek bir çözüm sistematiğinin geliştirilmesi önem kazanmaktadır. Bu çalışmada OD/GA sistemlerinin performans analizi için bir simülasyon modeli önerilmektedir. Önerilen model kullanılarak rassal depo içi atama politikası için farklı bekleme noktalarının (giriş, orta ve çıkış) dikkate alındığı senaryolar gerçekçi boyutlarda bir sistem için simüle edilerek sistem performansı ürünlerin sistemde geçirdikleri ortalama zaman, D/GA makinesinin ortalama seyahat süresi ve D/GA makinesi kullanım oranlarına göre incelenmektedir. Ele alınan örnekte, ürünlerin sistemde geçirdiği ortalama zaman ile D/GA makinesinin ortalama seyahat süresi açısından anlamlı farklılıkların oluşmadığı görülmektedir. Öte yandan, ele alınan örnek için D/GA makinesi bekleme noktası giriş konumundayken makine kullanım yüzdesinin daha düşük olduğu, dolayısıyla söz konusu konumlandırmanın daha iyi bir performansa sahip olduğu görülmektedir. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide simulation modelling for bulk arrival bulk service queueing system involved in a textile industry and analyze the performance metrics. Design/methodology/approach This paper describes the simulation modelling of a bulk queueing system with limited number of admissions and multiple vacations. The model is developed for the proposed queueing system using Flexsim 2017, and it is explained through an application observed in a textile industry involving the process of cone winding. Findings In this paper, the simulation model has been developed to study the behaviour of queues at different resources in a production system. Various performance measures such as average components, average waiting time, total number of inputs and outputs, processing time and idle time involved in a textile industry are evaluated using simulation and justified through numerical illustration. Practical implications The proposed simulation model may be used in various scenarios wherever a real time situation exists related to bulk queueing system. The results produced in this paper can be used by the manufacturing industries to enhance the need-based accuracy. It is worth pointing out that the findings are of direct practical relevance and can be successfully used for a number of industrial applications. Originality/value The approach suggested in this paper attempts to deal with the queueing system involved in a textile industry and provides numerical results in less time with less computer resources. It provides a reasonably good approximation for simple and complex queueing models where it is difficult to find closed form of theoretical results.
