As an ancient performing art, shadow puppetry is a treasure of Chinese art. However, with the development of society, shadow puppetry becomes less well‐known among the young generation. To preserve and further spread this traditional culture, the digitization of shadow puppets is playing an increasingly important role in shadow puppetry conservation. Despite this, the spread of shadow puppetry culture in modern times still faces many hindrances. In digitalized shadow puppet art, the virtual scenes in certain degree determine the artistic effect of shadow puppet performance. The commonly used method for digital shadow puppet scene construction is via artificially created models which are then placed in corresponding positions. Obviously, this is a cumbersome and time‐consuming task. Therefore, a semantic‐based scene generation method for digital shadow puppet performance scene is proposed in this paper. According to this method, the key information is extracted from the descriptive text using the Chinese text segmentation technology. Meanwhile, we generate semantic scene graphs and search the corresponding shadow puppet models in the model library to construct the virtual scenes of digital shadow puppet performance. In the evaluation experiment, we invited 30 volunteers (10 female and 20 male) who had been exposed to traditional shadow puppet play in their daily lives. As suggested by the experimental results, the digital shadow puppet performance scene generated in this paper exhibit advantages of convenient use and high availability, which largely enhance the effect of digital shadow puppet performance. It should nonetheless be noted that it's not easy to extract the spatial relations from complicated texts, which inevitably limits the effectiveness of our scene generation method. The research work of this paper aims to promote digital shadow puppet technology and provide insights for the inheritance and conservation of traditional shadow puppet art.

Chinese shadow puppetry has been recognized as a world intangible cultural heritage. However, it faces substantial challenges in its preservation and advancement due to the intricate and labor-intensive nature of crafting shadow puppets. To ensure the inheritance and development of this cultural heritage, it is imperative to enable traditional art to flourish in the digital era. This paper presents an Interactive Collaborative Creation System for shadow puppets, designed to facilitate the creation of high-quality shadow puppet images with greater ease. The system comprises four key functions: Image contour extraction, intelligent reference recommendation, generation network, and color adjustment, all aimed at assisting users in various aspects of the creative process, including drawing, inspiration, and content generation. Additionally, we propose an enhanced algorithm called Smooth Generative Adversarial Networks (SmoothGAN), which exhibits more stable gradient training and a greater capacity for generating highresolution shadow puppet images. Furthermore, we have built a new dataset comprising high-quality shadow puppet images to train the shadow puppet generation model. Both qualitative and quantitative experimental results demonstrate that SmoothGAN significantly improves the quality of image generation, while our system efficiently assists users in creating high-quality shadow puppet images, with a SUS scale score of 84.4. This study provides a valuable theoretical and practical reference for the digital creation of shadow puppet art.

The Prodigal Son, a well-known biblical parable cherished by children, has never been depicted using Balinese wayang, presenting an opportunity for cultural enrichment. This research aims to select appropriate Balinese wayang characters for the Bible story "The Lost Child." The motivation behind this study is to bridge the gap between the western visual style often associated with biblical depictions and the captivating Balinese wayang tradition, rekindling children's interest and appreciation for the narrative. The qualitative research method utilizes Thomas Aquinas' Christian theoretical literature and Balinese aesthetic theory, complemented by interviews and FGDs with fellow Doctoral students. The findings yield a deep correlation between the aesthetic theories, laying the foundation for selecting wayang characters. Wayang Tualen represents the father's kind traits, while Merdah embodies the adventurous youngest son. Sangut portrays the passionate firstborn, Cenk and Blonk represent dynamic and critical aspects, and Delem embodies arrogance and cunning. The research discussions enrich the study's scope, contributing to Balinese cultural preservation and its fusion with global characterizations. This artistic amalgamation fosters cross-cultural appreciation and artistic regeneration among younger generations with both the characters in the story and the characters in the Balinese wayang.
