Research of information systems: from parochial to international, towards global or glocal?

Abstract: The development over time of the Information Systems Journal and information systems (IS) research in general is examined by applying both quantitative and qualitative data analyses. The evidence suggests that the journal and the IS discipline have both evolved from parochial and national to become international. This evolution has influenced the phenomena and contexts being studied and, ultimately, theory and practice. Cultural and institutional differences are major obstacles to globalizing IS research. “…The Information Systems Journal (ISJ) is a leading international journal in the field of information systems (IS). The journal was created in 1991 by David Avison and Guy Fitzgerald as a British/European journal that aimed to challenge the existing American leadership in the field (Martinsons, ). Currently, ISJ is indexed in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) in the Social Science Edition, a database that only indexes those journals of the highest quality.…”

More importantly, the effects of online prejudice on relevant outcomes may vary among different cultures (Martinsons, 2016). Thus, it is important to repeat our study in other contexts to further investigate the impact of online prejudice on other outcomes in different cultural settings (Hong et al, 2014).…”

“…The global sharing of knowledge and technologies is fundamental to the development of the IS discipline. However, their application in a way that is sensitive to local conditions is central to address the complexity of innovation systems and, therefore, the continued relevance of the discipline (Martinsons 2016).…”
