Research methodologies to address clinical unmet needs and challenges in alcohol‐associated liver disease

Abstract: Alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) is emerging worldwide as the leading cause of liver-related morbidity, mortality, and indication for liver transplantation. The ALD Special Interest Group and the Clinical Research Committee at the digital American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases meeting in November 2020 held the scientific sessions to identify clinical unmet needs in ALD, and addressing these needs using clinical research methodologies.Of several research methodologies, the sessions were focu… Show more

“…While pharmacological and behavioral interventions remain the cornerstone of management at the individual level, specific public health policies for effective control of excessive alcohol use and its overall impact are needed. Future analyses and studies focusing on local regulations, socioeconomic and cultural factors influencing excessive alcohol use may be required to devise better policies at the population level to reduce alcohol-related mortality and morbidity effectively and thus reduce the global burden of disease (83). “…Efforts to bend the epidemiologic curves downward for women, minorities, young people, and, indeed, all people with ALD depend on strong public health efforts to reduce population-level alcohol use and to increase access to evidence-based AUD treatment. [81][82][83]…”

“…To date, despite medical developments in knowledge and drug treatments, liver transplantation (LT) remains the only curative treatment option for selected patients with acute liver failure, end-stage liver disease (ESLD), liver cancer and acquired or genetic metabolic liver disease[ 1 ]. ESLD is the most frequent indication for LT with alcohol-related liver disease as the main etiology[ 2 ]. Other common etiologies are metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) and viral hepatitis[ 3 , 4 ].…”
