Abstract. Active real-time databases have emerged as a research area in which concepts of active databases and real-time databases are combined into a real-time database with reactive behavior. However, this marriage is not free from complications. The main problem is that timeliness, i.e., predictability and e ciency, is of paramount importance in real-time databases, while reactive behavior may add to the unpredictability of the database. This survey addresses reactive behavior and timing constraints from a database perspective. Results of both real-time databases and active databases that have impact on active real-time databases are discussed, as well as projects which h a v e done research o n active real-time databases.

An active real-time database system (ARTDBS) is designed to provide timely response to the critical situations that are de®ned on database states. Although a number of studies have already addressed various issues in ARTDBSs, little attention has been paid to scheduling transactions in a distributed ARTDBS environment. In this paper, 2 we describe a detailed performance model of a distributed ARTDBS and investigate various performance issues in time-cognizant transaction processing in ARTDBSs. The experiments conducted evaluate the performance under various types of active workload and dierent distributed transaction-processing architectures. The performance metric used in the evaluations is the fraction of transactions that violate their timing constraints. We also describe and evaluate a nested transaction execution scheme that improves the real-time performance under high levels of active workload. Ó 1998 Elsevier Science Inc. All rights reserved.

Today's real-time systems (RTS) are characterized by managing large volumes of dispersed data making real-time distributed data processing a reality. Large business houses need to do distributed processing for many reasons, and they often must do it in order to stay competitive. So, efficient database management algorithms and protocols for accessing and manipulating data are required to satisfy timing constraints of supported applications. Therefore, new research in distributed real-time database systems (DRTDBS) is needed to investigate possible ways of applying database systems technology to real-time systems. This paper first discusses the performance issues that are important to DRTDBS, and then surveys the research that has been done so far on the issues like priority assignment policy, commit protocols and optimizing the use of memory in non-replicated/replicated environment pertaining to distributed real time transaction processing. In fact, this study provides a foundation for addressing performance issues important for the management of very large real time data and pointer to other publications in journals and conference proceedings for further investigation of unanswered research questions.
