Research evolution in science parks and incubators: foundations and new trends

Abstract: In this paper we undertake a quantitative review of the existing literature on parks and incubators to identify their foundations from a longitudinal perspective. To do so, we searched records in the SSCI database from 1990 to 2015 and identified 318 citing documents, which we split into 4 periods of 5 years each, to identify the interactions and path dependence that exist between different foundations of research. We evaluate the evolution of the theoretical foundations of this research line taking into accou… Show more

“…The overall goal of BIs is to develop a business, stimulate entrepreneurship, and solve difficulties in the entrepreneurial process (Charalabidis et al 2018). Currently, the development of BIs remains in a consolidation period (Diez-Vial and Montoro-Sanchez 2017). BIs are not only focusing increasingly on the development of networks and networking capabilities but also committing to developing powerful business and social networks that bring value to the incubatees in the form of intelligence and material resources (Cooper et al 2012;Galvão et al 2019).…”

“…Owing to the variety of terms used in literature to refer to the concept of SP, our search included the following phrases: science park, technology park, research park, university park, science-based industrial park, technopark, and technology and innovation park . The terms incubator, business incubator and technology-oriented business incubator are also included in the search due to their complementarity (Mian et al , 2016; Diez-Vial and Montoro-Sanchez, 2017). Journal articles including the above-mentioned terms in paper titles, abstracts or along the text were selected from relevant academic databases including EBSCOhost and ProQuest.…”

“…Academic research on SPs has increased notably during the last years, with a growing number of contributions, which include review articles published in high-impact factor journals, describing the research field, its evolution and future research lines (Mian et al , 2016; Diez-Vial and Montoro-Sanchez, 2017; Mora-Valentín et al , 2018).…”

“…Therefore, U-I researchers run the risk of duplicating empirical findings while leaving knowledge gaps in other areas (Delgado García et al 2015;Gerbin and Drnovsek 2016). Consequently, a coherent analysis of the evolution of the U-I collaboration research and a reflection against current thematic areas and emerging patterns are needed (Diez-Vial and Montoro-Sanchez 2017;Minguillo et al 2015;Teixeira and Mota 2012).…”
