Research Data Management (RDM) and the Evolving Identity of Academic Libraries and Librarians: A Literature Review

Abstract: Academic libraries and their staff are increasingly involved in the Research Data Management (RDM) practices and processes in their universities. This article explores the impact that such initiatives have on the image and identity of academic libraries. This paper proposes that involvement in and leadership of RDM university practices has the potential to re-shape the library's role, image, and identity within the university, and going forward, to contribute to the library's continuing relevance to research c… Show more

“…Librarians are well-positioned to lead the RDM agenda and therefore should take a leading role. This study is consistent with Andrikopoulou et al (2021), who found a positive collaboration among RDM stakeholders. It was also found that corporate stakeholders such as institutions can influence the performance directly through other internal staff or indirectly through other external stakeholders such as the government and funders (Li et al, 2020).…”

“…They are basically into collection development (Johnson, 2019), but with time there is a call for librarians to participate in RDM. In making a case for librarians to be involved in RDM, some argued that services in the library in higher institutions are strategically positioned to offer a significant role in RDM (Andrikopoulou Rowley & Walton, 2021). The librarians have practical skills that could be used in RDM.…”

“…Here we highlight the benefits of engaging with eResearch and libraries staff within or beyond your institute from an early stage in the research lifecycle. These professional staff are a supporting network holding knowledge and expertise in crafting solutions to data management challenges (Andrikopoulou et al, 2022). Researchers benefit from developing these relationships with staff who cultivate institutional knowledge and solutions that may not be captured in the traditional or domain-specific scientific literature.…”

“…The body of literature associated with research data management services in libraries and skill development has reached the point where literature reviews and scoping reviews are looking back in time to draw conclusions and offer suggestions to advance the field and the libraries' role. 79 Data mining proves itself as an emerging field as well, especially when linked to the Internet of Things (IoT). A recent study using both Clarivate Analytics Web of Science and Sciverse Scopus revealed that knowledge discovery in databases are paving the way to make data increasingly more meaningful.…”
