Research Article Variability and nutritional balance among genotypes of Coffea canephora (Rubiaceae) in drought versus adequate water supply

Abstract: We examined the effect of water availability on the nutritional balance of 15 genotypes of the clonal cultivar "Conilon BRS Ouro Preto" of Coffea canephora grown in two contrasting environments in terms of water availability. Biomass production and nutritional balance parameters, based on the deviance from the standard ratio among nutrients for the species, were estimated after 170 days of cultivation in these contrasting environments. The variability of responses among genotypes indicated a favorable for iden… Show more

“…Water availability also contributes to nutrient uptake due to large volumes of absorbable mineral nutrients in the water (Cramer;Hawkins;Verboom, 2009). Thus, soil moisture management can significantly interfere with the nutritional aspects, such as the accumulation and concentration of nutrients in leaves and fruits of the crop (Covre et al, 2018a;2018b;Starling et al, 2018). In addition, the adjustment of the internal nutrient content can affect the acclimatization mechanisms (Ramalho et al, 2013), which is directly related to the developmental capacity of the plant under specific environments like higher altitudes.…”

“…The response to changes in soil moisture and the magnitude of expression of the genetic variability being modulated by the amount of water available in the soil for several agronomic traits of coffee plants have been reported by studies assessing other genotypes (Silva et al, 2015;Carvalho et al, 2017;Rodrigues et al, 2017;Bonomo et al, 2018;Starling et al, 2018).…”

“…The nutritional content in plant tissues; the efficiency in which the plants acquire, translocate and utilize the nutrients; and tolerance to cultivation in environment with low fertility have all been successfully used as parameters to study the variability among genotypes of C. canephora and to identify groups with different traits (Martins et al, 2013a;2013b;Colodetti et al, 2014;Machado et al, 2016;Martins et al, 2015b;Starling et al, 2018). Differences among genotypes were observed for the content of all macronutrients in green tissues, and the magnitude of the genetic parameters showed that nutritional contents can be greatly influenced by the genetic constitution (Table 1).…”
