Research Article Analysis of p53 gene polymorphism (codon 72) in symptomatic patients with atherosclerosis.

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Atherosclerosis is a multifactorial pathological disease that alters the morphology and function of arterial walls. The atheroma growth leads to vessel hardening and lumen narrowing, limiting the blood flow. The atheroma plaque can eventually break, expose highly thrombogenic material and lead to platelet activation and subsequent formation of a thrombus that may block blood flow in loco, or even leading to obstruction of other vessels with a smaller diameter. This process is one of the main determin… Show more

“…In the Kuwaiti population, CAD prevalence exhibited an association with type 2 diabetes and high levels of triglyceride and cholesterol; however, there was no evidence of any influence of TP53 codon 72 genotypes (31). In Brazilian symptomatic CAD patients, neither atherosclerosis nor the risk factors were associated with Arg72Pro genotypes (63). Contrary with the current findings, Khan et al (35) reported Arg72 allele as a risk factor for CAD in South African (Indian ancestry) patients, but in line with the present study, the laboratory markers did not correlate with the genotypes.…”

“…Regarding the p53 protein, which is coded by the TP53 gene, is known as the guardian of the genome. The protein is a classical tumor suppressor protein related to cancer and several other diseases related to genomic instability, such as endometriosis, atherosclerosis and infertility [58][59][60][61]. Experimental approaches along with bioinformatic tools have contributed to increase our knowledge regarding diseases, development of new diagnosis and therapeutic strategies [62,63].…”
