RERG (Ras-like, oestrogen-regulated, growth-inhibitor) expression in breast cancer: a marker of ER-positive luminal-like subtype

Abstract: Strong RERG expression showed an association with longer breast cancer specific survival and distant metastasis free interval in the whole series as well as in the ER+ luminal group and these associations were independent of other prognostic variablesIn conclusion, we used novel bioinformatics methods to identify candidate genes to characterise ER+ luminal-like breast cancer. RERG gene is a key marker of the luminal BC class and can be used to separate distinct prognostic subgroups.

“…GPX3 silencing has been reported in metastatic tumors, such as in gastric carcinomas, where it increased migration and impaired mechanisms regulating reactive oxygen species (47). RERG was reported as a prognostic marker in breast cancer, whose expression correlated inversely proliferation, patient survival, and development of distant metastases (48). It has been reported that PDZK1 forms a complex linking somatostatin receptors and phospholipase C-b (PLC-b), necessary for somatostatin physiologic responses (49).…”

“…Many studies of gene expression have identified expression profiles and gene sets that are prognostic, predictive, or both for patients with breast cancer (van de Vijver et al, 2002;Sorlie et al, 2003;Chang et al, 2004;Ma et al, 2004;Paik et al, 2004;Bertucci et al, 2005;Wang et al, 2005;Habashy et al, 2011;Patsialou et al, 2012;Tian et al, 2013). Prognostic and predictive biomarkers for breast cancer commonly used in clinical practice include estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR) over-expression, oncogene over-expression c-erbB2 , human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (Her-2), protein 53 (p53), protein 21 (p21) and etc.…”

“…However, a thorough understanding of the functions of the RERG gene is still lacking (Wang et al, 2006) because the majority of research is related to cancer (Habashy, 2011). In this study, fourteen primer pairs were designed based on the RERG gene sequence of the cow (ruminant).…”

“…The RERG gene plays an important role in adjusting growth, differentiation, survival, and proliferation of cells (Habashym et al, 2011, Habashy et al, 2011. In a previous study, reported a mutation site in the first intron at 264 bp in the QianBei Ma goat, and results of associations between SNPs and growth traits demonstrated that body weight, body height, and chest breadth were significantly greater in individuals with the AB genotype than those with the AA or BB genotypes (P < 0.01).…”
