When designing products to fit a specific user, it is essential to know the user’s upper limb range and strength capabilities at each point of the range space. This is particularly relevant when those capabilities are atypical, e.g., in cases of nonstandard body dimensions, disability, or old age. In this paper, we describe a new method to measure and model the strength capabilities at each point of any person’s upper limb range and then present this information in the form of an Individual Convenient Zone (ICZ) model, which is helpful in virtual product prototyping (CAD) for a specific user. The proposed new method includes creating a database of multiple, detailed, spatial-force characteristics, quickly identifying and modeling the ICZ of any human, and analyzing the ergonomics of a product using a digital human model in combination with the ICZ model. The paper also describes an example of how the proposed methodology can be used to customize kitchen furniture design to the ICZ of a specific senior. The expected result of incorporating ICZ into the design is a better fit between the designed product and the user’s needs, supporting user-centered design methodology. Using ICZ enables the involvement of end-users in product design (participatory design). This is particularly important when designing for people with mobility impairments who are more sensitive to nonergonomic solutions. The ICZ modeling method described in this article may have broader applications beyond kitchen furniture design; it could be used to design workspaces and other similar areas where humans reside and perform manipulation activities.

Embora espaços verdes no âmbito residencial seja um tema frequente de pesquisa, espaços verdes em condomínios para idosos ainda é um assunto pouco explorado. Assim, esta pesquisa teve como objetivo investigar os atributos projetuais preferíveis e necessários ao desenvolvimento e planejamento de espaços verdes em condomínios para idosos. Para alcançar esse objetivo, a pesquisa teve abordagem qualitativa e exploratória. Os procedimentos aplicados envolveram revisão sistemática de literatura, foto-questionário aplicado a 35 sujeitos e grupo focal. Os dados coletados provenientes de questões abertas foram tratados por análise de conteúdo, e os de questões fechadas, pela frequência absoluta e relativa. Os principais resultados revelaram a preferência dos idosos por residir em condomínios horizontais de casas com jardins frontais em relação à rua e jardins nos fundos da residência, com possibilidade de jardins privativos e jardins comuns, com os mais variados espaços para atividades físicas e de lazer, caso residissem em um. Os benefícios mais relevantes dos espaços verdes em condomínios para idosos são a produção de comida saudável, a reconexão dos idosos com o ambiente natural, o incentivo a interação social, o estímulo a atividades físicas diárias, entre outros. É importante que os ambientes se adequem aos usuários idosos, pois assim minimizam-se riscos de acidentes, e se oferecem conforto, autonomia e independência a esses indivíduos. Espaços verdes projetados para atender a população idosa contribuem para um processo de envelhecimento saudável, ativo e autônomo.

The classroom space located in the attic of an old building is the subject of this study. The building was renovated and new spaces were created in the unused attic to expand classrooms. The original space under the sloping roof was not used because its internal headroom was not suitable. During the restoration, the entire original truss was raised gradually (in parts) by 1.2 m. This created a space with an entire area that can be used for classrooms. Continuous strips of vertical windows measuring 860/600 mm were installed in the space which enable a visual connection between the interior space and the exterior. At roof level, there are also two rows of skylights above each other which ensure enough daylight is present but create unpleasant overheating in the summer. The purpose of this study is to find a way to optimize the shading of transparent surfaces and the heat accumulation of building structures in order to achieve suitable interior conditions in the attic. This task was achieved by shading the windows in the attic. Shaded windows decrease illumination by 82% compared to unshaded ones. The percentage decrease in illumination is more significant than the decrease in the maximum temperature due to overheating. Additionally, the maximum temperature in the attic drops by only 31% if vertical and skylight windows are shaded with external blinds compared to unshaded windows. The minimum air temperature reached in the attic also drops by 26%. In order for users in the attic space to feel comfortable, it is necessary to use HVAC equipment in addition to the design of suitably built structures and window shading.
