Despite notable recent exceptions (for instance Funke, 2020), corpus-based research into South Asian Englishes has so far concentrated on structural features. Thus, empirical pragmatic research in said varieties is still sparse, although there has been increasing interest in variational pragmatics in world Englishes (Schneider & Barron, 2008). For instance, requests have been examined in both native and non-native varieties of English. However, studies on apologies have largely focussed on first-language varieties of English (Deutschmann, 2003). Against this background, the present study investigates apology patterns in two South Asian second-language varieties of English, Indian and Sri Lankan English, and their historical input variety British English. With the help of the spoken parts of the respective components of the International Corpus of English, multifactorial analyses—including an improved form of random forests that explicitly takes interactions between several predictors into account—model the choice of sorry as opposed to other apology forms. Findings suggest quantitative differences in the use of sorry which are influenced by factors such as type of apology, topic and age or combinations of said factors. In sum, this study suggests that apology forms and frequencies are sensitive to the speakers’ regional background and sociobiographic factors as well as to structural and contextual parameters.

To empirically trace functional characteristics of texts such as speaker/writer involvement, narrativity or persuasiveness with a view to potential (a) intra-national variability in Indian English and (b) short-term diachronic change in South Asian Englishes, the South Asian Varieties of English (SAVE) corpus, its updated version SAVE2020, and the Corpus of Regional Indian Newspaper Englishes (CORINNE) are subjected to Multidimensional Analysis (MDA, Biber 1988) as implemented in Nini (2019). A hierarchical cluster analysis of the respective MDA scores reveals the tendency of mesolectal Indian Englishes as well as acrolectal Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan English to employ features of a conceptually written nature more readily than acrolectal Indian, Maldivian, Nepali, and Pakistani English. Still, in the observed time span of 15 years, the acrolects of South Asian Englishes also develop towards conceptually written language.

The subjunctive alternation in Indian English

The study at hand is an exploration of the alternation between the mandative subjunctive and its equivalent modal construction with the verb should in Indian English. The study complements the growing body of research on the morphosyntax of the variety and it enhances our understanding of the relatively under‐researched alternation. It adds a special focus on the short‐term diachronic development of the subjunctive alternation in Indian English by using data from the South Asian Varieties of English corpus and its 2020 update. The following research questions are being investigated in the paper: Which factors influence the alternation between subjunctive and should in Indian English; are there short‐term diachronic adjustments to the subjunctive paradigm? A multifactorial model was fitted on 508 extracted data points with the following predictors: lexical diversity, newspaper, word count, distance, gender, linking word, negation, subject number, subject person, time and trigger lemma. The results show minor diachronic adjustments and highlight well‐known predictors of the alternation like voice as important factors.
