Repurposing Plant Virus Nanoparticles

Abstract: Plants have been explored for many years as inexpensive and versatile platforms for the generation of vaccines and other biopharmaceuticals. Plant viruses have also been engineered to either express subunit vaccines or act as epitope presentation systems. Both icosahedral and helical, filamentous-shaped plant viruses have been used for these purposes. More recently, plant viruses have been utilized as nanoparticles to transport drugs and active molecules into cancer cells. The following review describes the us… Show more

“…Their repetitive organization and immunogenicity are ideal prerequisites for new types of safe and potent vaccines. These are accessible from plants within 2–3 weeks and thus already in phase III clinical trials, with allowances in veterinary as well as emergency uses in humans (reviewed for example, in Balke & Zeltins, ; Hefferon, ; K. L.Lee, Twyman, Fiering, & Steinmetz, ; Lomonossoff & D'Aoust, ; Rybicki, ; Takeyama, Kiyono, & Yuki, ). In the pipeline of precision diagnostics and pharmaceuticals, plant VNPs double‐ or oligofunctionalized with imaging agents, disease‐ or cell type‐specific targeting ligands, and therapeutics might push the boundaries of present drugs, as indicated by many proof‐of‐concept studies.…”

“…Immunogenic Epitope peptides can be displayed on the surface capsid protein subsequently those peptides assembled like virus particles act as vehicles for epitope display. Expression of immunogenic epitope peptides as fusions with surface loops of plant viral Capsid proteins has been used for the generation of several candidate animal vaccines (Hefferon 2018).…”

“…Microbial nanotechnology is a bio-driven scientific discipline that interconnects microbial biotechnology and nanotechnology. Numerous biological resources have been exploited for the biosynthesis of nanoparticles, including bacteria [ 66 ], fungi [ 67 ], algae [ 68 ], viruses [ 69 ], plant extracts [ 70 ], and agro-industrial wastes [ 71 ]. Fungi, yeast, and bacteria are currently receiving particular attention for the biological production of nanoparticles owing to their capacity to biotransform and bioaccumulate metals ( Table 1 ).…”
