Repulsive short-range three-nucleon interaction

Abstract: The three nucleon interaction that arises from pion and the effective scalar and vector meson exchange components of the nucleon-nucleon interaction is constructed and shown to be repulsive. Using several wavefunction models we show that this interaction reduces the calculated binding energy of the trinucleons by about 200 keV. The contributions of intermediate N(1440) resonances to this three nucleon interaction and of the D-state component in the trinucleon model are estimated, and shown to be small.

“…The presence of NN * (1440) configurations in the deuteron was suggested long ago [101][102][103][104]. Graphs involving the excitation of N * (1440) appear also in other systems, as for example the neutral pion production in proton-proton reactions [105] or the threenucleon interaction mediated by π and σ exchange contributing to the triton binding energy [106]. The excitation of the Roper resonance has also been used to explain the missing energy spectra in the p(α, α ′ ) reaction [107] or the np → d(ππ) 0 reaction [108].…”

“…The one-pion-exchange and the remaining phenomenological part of the potential can be written as a sum of eighteen operators, The first fourteen are charge-independent, O p=1,14 ij 12) and the last four, O p=15,18 ij binding energy. There could in principle be more charge-independence-breaking (CIB) terms such as L · ST ij or S ij (τ zi + τ zj ) but the scattering data are not sufficiently precise to identify them at present.…”

“…are three-body correlations induced by the three-nucleon interaction, which we take in the form suggested by perturbation theory: 12) withr = yr, y a scaling parameter, and ǫ x a strength parameter. Here x = A, C, and R refers to the different parts of the NNN potential.…”

“…Of course in a meson exchange picture additional processes should be added containing other meson exchanges like π − ρ, ρ − ρ; also different intermediate excited states might play a role. To some extent 3NF models with respect to those extensions have already been developed and applied [38][39][40][41]. Further studies should be performed.…”
