Reproductive strategies in hermaphroditic gastropods: conceptual and empirical approaches

Abstract: An individual optimizes its reproductive success by adopting a particular reproductive strategy. Studying the details of a reproductive strategy leads to an understanding of how sexual selection acts, as the former is the process via which the individual reproduces successfully. Hermaphroditic gastropods display a bewildering diversity of reproductive strategies, which may be due to their mode of gender expression, when compared with well-studied separate-sexed species. Extensive theoretical, observational, an… Show more

“…For example, many simultaneous hermaphrodites possess specific organs to digest sperm and/or other ejaculate components (reviewed in Baur 1998;Michiels 1998;Nakadera and Koene 2013) and so direct (nongenetic) benefits from mating in the female role could potentially result from ejaculate digestion, which might generate a female sex-role preference. However, to our knowledge, evidence that the digestion of ejaculates is actually energetically beneficial to the recipient is still lacking (see Postmating Conflicts sections below).…”

“…In the last few decades, there has been increasing attention on sexual selection in such hermaphroditic organisms (reviewed in Anthes, 2010;Leonard, 2013;Nakadera and Koene, 2013). Theoretical studies have suggested that the influences of sexual selection are significant in simultaneous hermaphrodites, as they are in species with separate sexes (Charnov, 1979;Michiels and Koene, 2006).…”

“…The sexually reproducing ones practice two reproductive strategies: male and female (e.g., Nakadera & Koene, 2013). Males and females of gonochoric species compete for mates, using various methods in order to find an adequate partner and produce the Strongest and healthiest offspring possible (survival of parental lineage).…”
