The present study was conducted at milk pocket areas Sahjadpur Upazila under Sirajgonj district and Shathia and Bera Upazila under the Pabna district, respectively. A total number of one hundred ninety (190) dairy farmers were surveyed randomly selecting twenty farmers from each village. All data collected were statistically analyzed using Univariate General Linear Model (GLM) procedure of SPSS computer program. Lack of balanced feed was the highest cause of repeat breeding claimed by about sixty (60%) percent farmers in this study. The highest incidence of RB was obtained in LocalHolstein Friesian crosses (69%) and lowest in LocalSahiwal crosses (8%). From the study of present findings; it can be concluded that genotype, nutrient of feed, quality of semen, frequency of insemination and reproductive problems are the main possible causes for RB in the studied areas.

Forty six Holstein Friesian repeat breeding cows (the average AI/conception was 5.2 ± 0.2) were investigated using the progesterone assay after AI to determine possible differences in plasma progesterone profiles between summer and winter seasons. Twenty eight (60.9%) and 18 (39.1%) cows were followed in summer (June-August) and winter (December-February), respectively. In the summer season, the total progesterone concentrations were higher (P < 0.05) in pregnant cows with normal luteal function compared to those in non-pregnant animals with abnormal luteal function. In contrast, in the winter season, there was no difference (P = 0.12) in total progesterone concentrations between pregnant and non-pregnant cows with normal or abnormal luteal functions. When the progesterone concentrations were compared, the pregnant and non-pregnant cows with normal luteal functions exhibited no difference (P = 0.92) in summer and winter seasons. Thus, the present study indicates that there is no effect of season on plasma progesterone profiles in repeat breeding cows; however in the summer season, the total progesterone concentrations were considerably higher in pregnant cows with normal luteal function compared to non-pregnant cows with abnormal luteal function.

ResumoA eficiência reprodutiva é um dos principais fatores envolvidos na viabilidade econômica do setor de criação de bovinos. Objetivou-se realizar a avaliação ginecológica e citológica em vacas Holandesas com mais de três repetições de cio. O experimento foi desenvolvido em seis propriedades leiteiras comerciais, com manejos sanitários e reprodutivos semelhantes e assistidas por médicos veterinários. Foram incluídas apenas vacas da raça Holandesa, até cinco parições e mais de três repetições de cio consecutivas. Na propriedade, os animais foram identificados e procedidos o exame ginecológico e citologia endometrial. No presente estudo foram avaliadas 77 vacas e as causas reprodutivas encontradas em vacas Holandesas sujeitas ao descarte involuntário foram: endometrite clínica com secreção vaginal purulenta e mais que 3% de neutrófilos (7,79%), endometrite clínica com secreção vaginal purulenta e menos que 3% de neutrófilos (2,6%), endometrite subclínica (10,4%), urovagina (1,3%) e 77,9% que não se sabe a causa, porém não está associado aos distúrbios reprodutivos avaliados. Concluiu-se que: a) o índice de vacas que não apresentaram a causa diagnosticada é muito alto e isto interfere diretamente na eficiência reprodutiva; b) o exame proposto diagnosticou 22,1% de distúrbios clínicos que poderiam ser evitados ou tratados e desta forma reduzindo o descarte involuntário. The experiment was conducted in six commercial dairy herds both with similar reproductive and sanitary managements and assisted by veterinarians. It was included only Holstein cows up to five calving and more than three consecutive repetitions of estrus. Seventy-seven cows were identified and carried gynecological examination and endometrial cytology.
