Reproductive Parameters of the Dogo Argentino Bitch

Abstract: The Dogo Argentino (DA) is the first and only breed from Argentina recognized worldwide. Although its morphologic features have been well established, its normal reproductive parameters are not clearly known. “…Comparison of the prolificacy in the two FCI Groups of small breeds (III and IX) confirms the hypothesis that there is a relationship between mother's body weight and the litter size. This is consistent with the results obtained by other researchers (Kelley, 2002;Feldman and Nelson, 2007;Johnson, 2008;Borge et al, 2011;Caffaratti et al, 2013). Among born pups, the frequency of males in our study was 50.04% and this was consistent with the studies conducted by Tedor and Reif (1978) on different dog breeds, where 50.6% of born males were reported.…”

“…Prevalence of dystocic parturitions in the breed is of 15.5%, Table 1 [4] informed that dystocia frequency in Boston Terriers was 62% and that 43% of French Bulldog breed parturitions was dystocic. In 2009 Bergström published in his doctoral thesis an incidence of 5.7 per thousands of parturition disorders in the studied population [5], communicated an incidence of 32% in Boxer breed and 27.7% in canine species, Boston Terriers [3] presented 92% of dystocic parturitions, in dogo Argentine breed 89.3% of eutocic parturitions parturitions and 10.7% of dystocic [6].…”

“…On the other hand, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi has been associated with certain influences of Nordic settlers in the region, and this determination complies with the outcome that the Welsh Corgi breed was mostly related to certain European and Nordic dogs such as the Alaskan Malamute, Bichon Frise and Doberman Pinscher breeds ( McGreevy, 1999 ). Additionally, the Dogo Argentino is the first and only Argentinean breed that has been accepted by FCI ( Caffaratti et al., 2013 ). This classification separated this breed from others.…”
