Results not discussed in a previously published qualitative study (Spear, 2001) are presented in this article. Analysis of the personal narratives of eight pregnant adolescents who attended an alternative school for pregnant teens yielded the following categories: decision making, contraceptive behavior and sexual attitudes, and future expectations. The findings revealed that decisions regarding pregnancy were made with little deliberation and some participants implied that pregnancy was planned. Although knowledgeable about how to prevent pregnancy, participants did not consistently practice contraception and their sexual experiences were marked by indifference and lacked intimacy. Future expectations consistently included support from the fathers of their unborn children. Implications for nursing practice and further research are discussed.

Cancer is a relatively rare phenomenon in adolescents and a traumatic experience which arouses feelings of anger, anxiety, fear and sadness. For the adolescent with cancer, there are missed opportunities, not only in daily life but also through lost social events such as dances or football games with friends. Adolescent cancer patients may understand the implications of the diagnosis of cancer but lack the personal resources or life event experience which could equip them to cope and make sense of the many potential problems which may accompany cancer. This paper reviews and explores the literature associated with the adolescent with cancer.

Increasing demands for sex education have been associated with a plethora of recommendations, regulations and resources with resulting variability of content, strategy, quality and outcome. While numerous studies confirm that the health behaviour of teenagers is not altered by the teaching of facts alone, other data suggest that appreciation of personal risk and learned assertiveness skills are associated with changes in population behaviours. Peer led teaching is a powerful and probably essential component of school health and sex education. Evaluated interventions with agreed purpose and acceptable methodologies are essential if there is to be any real expectation of health benefit from sex education.
