Reproductive biology of blue swimming crab, Portunus segnis (Forskal, 1775) in Yumurtalık Cove, Northeastern Mediterranean, Turkey

Abstract: Blue swimming crab, Portunus segnis is a Lessepsian migrant into the Mediterranean and little is known about the biology of it in Iskenderun Bay, Northeastern Mediterranean, Turkey. In the present study the sex ratio, gonadal development stages, gonadosomatic index, size at first sexual maturity, and the fecundity of P. segnis were examined. The specimens of P. segnis were collected monthly from July 2014 to June 2015 (except February) with trawl net from the Yumurtalık Cove. The crabs were found throughout th… Show more

“…In Vietnam, it is distributed in the wild throughout the long coastline and aggregated densely in Kien Giang (south of the Mekong Delta) waters [8,11]. It matures and reproduces continuously in one spawning season [1214]. Planktonic larvae may be transported long distances, supposedly driven by a combination of factors such as temperature, wind, surface currents and salinity [1417], and spatial distribution depends on larval stages [15,16,18].…”

“…Male of ornate spiny lobster was found to be more dominant compared to female in Sebatik Island waters. Chi-square (X 2 ) test results on the sex ratio show a significant difference (P>0.05), which means that the ratio between female and male ornate spiny lobster is unbalanced 23 . The growth pattern of ornate spiny lobster was negatively allometric, so carapace length increases faster than ornate spiny lobster weight.…”

“…The species is one of the earliest Lessepsian crustacean invaders [22] recorded in Egyptian and Palestinian waters 30 years after the completion of the Suez Canal [23]. In the following years, it has successfully colonized the Levantine basin from Egypt to Turkey [24]; the Aegean Sea; eastern Sicily and the northern Tyrrhenian Sea [25]; and more recently, Tunisian, Maltese, Libyan, and Cypriot coastal waters [26][27][28][29]. Figure 1 and Table S1 in the Supplementary Materials provide an updated review of the crab's occurrence in invaded Mediterranean areas.…”
