Reproductive biology of Blackchin tilapia, Sarotherodon melanotheron (Pisces: Cichlidae) from Brimsu Reservoir, Cape Coast, Ghana

Abstract: This study described some aspects of the reproductive biology of Blackchin tilapia (Sarotherodon melanotheron, Cichlidae) from Brimsu reservoir. A total of 457 specimens were sampled using a monofilament gill net of mesh size 25 mm from September, 2009 to September, 2010. Standard length for the species ranged between 7.5 and 17.6 cm, with both males and females having a unimodal modal length of 10.0 to 10.9 cm. The length at sexual maturity (L 50) was 11.26 and 11.34 cm for males and females, respectively. Th… Show more

“…This negative allometry is similar to those obtained by Chikou [24] in several water reservoirs in Benin (b ranged from 2.55 to 2.76), and those obtained by Ecoutin and Albaret [25] in the Ebrié lagoons in Côte d'Ivoire (b = 2.78) and Sine Saloum in Senegal (b = 2.81). These results are different from those found by Mireku et al [26] in the Brimsu reservoir in Ghana with b values that ranged from 3.95 to 4.94 for males and 4.08 to 4.99 for females, by Lalèyè [14] in the Ouémé River in Benin where the values of the regression coefficient b (3.07) were not significantly different from 3 and those obtained by Ndimele et al [27] for the same species (S. melanotheron) in Lake Ologe, Nigeria with b values ranging from 3.09 to 3.12. The correlation coefficient (R²) values for males, females were 0.92 and 0.93 respectively while dry season values were 0.92 and 0.96 for the wet season.…”

“…Although, many studies have been conducted on some aspects of the ecology of fishes in Nigeria, there is a dearth of reports of this species (H. odoe) in Lake Eleiyele (Offem et al 2009;Kareem et al 2016), which necessitates this research. The objective of this study is to determine the length-weight relationship, condition factor, fecundity and gonadosomatic index of Hepsetus odoe in Lake Eleiyele, which would serve as important tools in describing the status of fish population, predicting the potentials of fisheries such as knowledge of recruitment pattern from fecundity and gonadosomatic index, selective exploitation, effective conservation and management of this species in the water-body (Abowei and Hart 2009;Arawomo 1982cited in Idowu 2013Kareem et al 2016;Mireku et al 2016).…”

“…All lengths and weights were measured in centimetres and grams respectively. Gonads were dissected, weighed and preserved in 5% formalin and Gilson's fluid (Akponine and Ayoade 2012;Mireku et al 2016). Gonad maturity (stage IV) was visually and microscopically observed and characterised by large ovaries, yellowish or milky-whitish in colour, visible opaque oocytes without bruised areas and occupying three quarter of the entire body cavity with blood capillaries (Bagenal 1978).…”

“…The Brimsu reservoir (Figure 1) is located approximately 15 km northeast of Cape Coast in the Central Region of Ghana (5 • 11′N and 1 • 16′W). It was built in 1928 through the construction of a dam on the Kakum River (Mireku, 2012). The Kakum River passes through the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese District and Cape Coast Metropolitan area and is elevated approximately 150-300 m above sea level (Amankwaah & Ampomah, 1997).…”
