The Special Wildlife Reserve of Gueumbeul (RSFG) consists of a water reservoir (the basin) frequented by a diversity of fish and migratory birds. The most represented in terms of abundance is the species Sarotherodon melanotheron. The objective of this study was to determine the relations weight-length and to characterize the condition factor of S. melanotheron, in the basin of Gueumbeul. A total of 628 fish were sampled including 364 males, 178 females and 86 immature individuals from March 2019 to February 2020. The total length (TL) of S. melanotheron specimens sampled in the Gueumbeul reserve ranged from 6.1 cm to 17.6 cm with an average of 11.08 ± 1.82 cm and the weight (W) from 4.8 g to 103 g with an average of 27.25 ± 12.09 g. The results of the weight-length analyses gave values of 2.69 and 2.77 for the regression coefficient (b) for males and females respectively, and 2.72 and 2.76 for the dry and wet seasons. This reflects negative allometric growth in both sexes (male and female) and by season (dry and wet season). No statistically significant difference was noted for dry and wet season b values for S. melanotheron in the Gueumbeul basin, unlike condition factors between males and females and between dry and wet season where significant differences in K values were noted.

A preliminary investigation of length-weight relationship, condition factor and reproductive ecology of African pike fish, Hepsetus odoe, was conducted between June to August 2010 in Lake Eleiyele. A total of 90 samples of the fish species were caught by fishermen using gill nets. The results obtained showed that fish species had isometric growth pattern (contrary to negative allometry expected) with the growth exponent, b value of 2.64, that is not statistically different from 3 and with high statistical power of 0.866 when tested. The mean condition factor, K, was found to be 2.6, indicating that the fish species were in good condition in the study area. For reproductive biology, mean fecundity and gonadosomatic index were found to be 1349 eggs and 3.53% respectively. This study was necessary to fill the knowledge gap and provide information for management and conservation of the investigated species in the lake system. This study recommended that further research needs to be conducted because the sampling was carried out in the rainy season period and within a quarter of a year.

Although small‐scale fisheries and aquaculture provide opportunities to increase fish yield to supplement rural food and income, they remain undeveloped in Ghana. To contribute towards the development of the sectors, this study sought to assess the biology and ecology of Oreochromis niloticus and Sarotherodon melanotheron in the Brimsu reservoir to provide the requisite information for their management. From the results, mean temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH and transparency of the reservoir were 30.03 ± 0.27°C, 3.78 ± 0.38 mg/L, 8.30 ± 0.21 and 69.79 ± 1.76 cm, respectively. S. melanotheron had a sex ratio of 1:1.36; with mean condition factors of 2.177 ± 0.089 and 2.06 ± 0.029 (p = 0.08) for males and females, respectively. The sex ratio of O. niloticus was 1.45: 1; with mean condition factors of 2.208 ± 0.012 and 2.257 ± 0.014 (p = 0.07) for males and females, respectively. Both species exhibited positive allometric growth with no significant differences between the condition factors for males and females. In addition, there was no significant difference between the sex ratios for S. melanotheron but the number of males of O. niloticus was significantly higher than the females (p ˂ 0.05). Size at sexual maturity (Lm), form factor (a3.0), growth coefficient (K), asymptotic length (L∞) and natural mortality (M) of S. melanotheron were 18.00 cm, 0.020, 0.42 year−1, 30.32 cm and 0.64 year−1, respectively. For O. niloticus Lm, a3.0, K, L∞ and M were 18.57 cm, 0.0223, 0.26 year−1, 38.42 cm and 0.41 year−1, respectively. However, the catch per unit effort for O. niloticus was higher than that of S. melanotheron throughout the study period. The conditions of the reservoir were favourable for the growth of these cichlids. It is recommended that measures should be put in place for the sustainable management and exploitation of fish stocks.
