“…Most non-guarded females displayed the N-type pattern, which was considered to be a primary stage in the reproductive series (period 1 or before, de Gaudemar and Beall 1999). In contrast, almost half of the guarded females displayed the M-type pattern (period 2, de Gaudemar and Beall 1999).…”

“…However, the N-type satellite might be a form of "dominant male mimicry" -sometimes, an N-type satellite was seen alongside the female while the true dominant was away from the nest, chasing away other satellites. When there was a relatively long time before the dominant returned to the nest, the satellite remained slightly downstream of the female and approached her frequently while vibrating its body, which are typical behaviours of a paired male (Kimura 1972;Satou et al 1991;de Gaudemar and Beall 1999). As female oviposition is more likely to be triggered by the N-type male guard than an M-type male, such a tactic might compensate for the disadvantage of displaying the N-type pattern.…”

“…The experiment was conducted in a semi-natural channel beside Lapitxuri stream, a tributary to the Nivelle River in south-western France (+43°16'59", -1°28'54") (De Gaudemar and Beall 1999). Behavioral observations and offspring sampling were performed from November 2012 to the end of March 2013, which corresponds to brown trout spawning season under this latitude.…”

“…These results validate the observations of others who also used dummies to investigate salmonines spawning behaviour (Newcombe and Hartman 1980;Satou et al 1987Satou et al , 1991Satou et al , 1994Foote et al 2004). The entire Salmoninae spawning process can be understood as a long chain of inter-related FBPs that run in increased intensity leading to gamete release (Tautz and Groot 1975;Satou et al 1987;1994;de Gaudemar and Beall 1999;Berejikian et al 2000).…”
