“…In our study, rams and ewes were fed to meet their live weight maintenance requirements (AFRC 1993) and had unlimited access to water and mineral salts. Forty-eight hours after the removal of pessaries (50 day after melatonin implantation), ewes were used in an individual ram serving capacity test (after Kilgour & Whale, 1980;and Damián, Beracochea, Hötzel, Banchero, & Ungerfeld, 2015). For 20 min, individual rams were exposed to three oestrous ewes in a 15-m 2 pen, and the number of mountings with (serve) or without (mount) ejaculation was recorded.…”

“…Although there is scarce information to understand the reproductive development as a whole process, other environmental cues also have differential influences on the development of sperm production and sexual behaviour. For example, mother rearing has stronger influences on behaviour than in semen production (Damián et al, ), even during the rams’ adult life (Damián et al, ). Also, dominance relationships have stronger influences on sexual behaviour than in semen production in goat kids (Sánchez‐Dávila, Bernal Barragán, Bosque‐González, & Ungerfeld, ).…”

“…The total number of spermatozoa in the ejaculate was calculated. Onset of puberty was defined as the age at which the lamb's ejaculate contained at least 50 million of spermatozoa with at least 10% of spermatozoa with motile sperm (Amann & Schanbacher, ; Damián, Beracochea, Hötzel, Banchero, & Ungerfeld, ).…”
