Reproductive and Mating Success in the Small-Mouthed Salamander (Ambystoma texanum) Estimated via Microsatellite Parentage Analysis

Abstract: Bateman's principles of sexual selection predict that the sex with ''cheaper'' gametes may maximize reproductive efforts by mating multiply and so display greater positive covariance between reproductive and mating success. We conducted a semi-controlled breeding experiment to genetically quantify sexual selection in adult Ambystoma texanum, a sexually monomorphic salamander with simple courtship behaviors. We used four polymorphic microsatellite loci to genotype 57 adults enclosed in a breeding wetland and co… Show more

“…Strong sexual selection is promoted when male phenotypic traits are correlated with access to mates (Gopurenko, Williams & DeWoody, 2007). Given that statistically significant opportunities for selection and sexual selection were found in males, and also that a positive relationship between male SVL and priorityof-access to females has been demonstrated in Copperhead (Schuett, 1996;Schuett, 1997), it is not surprising that a significant correlation emerged in the present study between male SVL and the number of offspring sired.…”

“…Head et al (2008) Yes Yes Neither density nor OSR affected I s or selection on male traits 11. Gopurenko et al (2007) No N ⁄ A Bateman gradients were calculated. Reproductive success was positively correlated with mating success in both males and females, and the slopes of the two regressions did not differ significantly.…”

“…Initial enclosure construction occurred in early February 2004 when the ground was frozen to a depth of[30 cm and several weeks prior to the start of the breeding migration. The perimeter of the enclosure consisted of a fence buried to a depth of 25 cm and a height of up to 1.5 m above ground, completely preventing salamander crossings as described in Gopurenko et al (2007). Pitfall traps were installed and spaced 10 m apart, both inside and outside of the fence perimeter.…”
