Reproductive abnormalities in glyphosate-resistant cotton caused by lower CP4-EPSPS levels in the male reproductive tissue

Abstract: Glyphosate treatments to glyphosate-resistant (GR) cotton have been associated with poor pollination and increased boll abortion. Anatomical studies were conducted to characterize the effect of glyphosate treatments on the development of male and female reproductive organs of cotton flowers at anthesis. In comparison with nontreated plants, glyphosate applied at both the four-leaf stage postemergence (POST) and at the eight-leaf stage POST directed inhibited the elongation of the staminal column and filament, … Show more

“…In plants, including weeds, glyphosate inhibits chloroplast-localized EPSP synthase (5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase) (Pline et al, 2002;Castle et al, 2004). Overexpression of the EPSPS gene in cells renders glyphosate tolerance in transformed plants (Castle et al, 2004;Pline-Srnic, 2006).…”

“…Com isso, a aplicação de glyphosate mostrava-se prejudicial em alguns casos, como por exemplo, em plantas de algodão, onde não se recomendava a aplicação do herbicida em plantas mais desenvolvidas (Pline et al, 2002). A aplicação nestas plantas causava queda de capulhos e perdas na produtividade (Jones e Snipes, 1999).…”

“…under the cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV)-35S promoter, exhibits an excellent vegetative tolerance to glyphosate (Pline et al, 2002;Yasuor et al, 2006). However, exposing GRC to glyphosate after the fourth-leaf stage can result in yield reduction due to reduced self pollination (Pline et al, 2003a;Viator et al, 2003Viator et al, , 2004Yasuor et al, 2006).…”
