Reproduction in Goats

Abstract: Reproductive activity of the goat begins when the females reach puberty, which happens at 5 months of age. The ovarian or estrous cycle is the period between two consecutive estrus. It is also the time that lasts the development of the follicle in the ovary, until rupture occurs and ovulation takes place, which coincides with the appearance of estrus. This chapter will describe the physiological and endocrinological bases of estrus in the goat. Likewise, factors affecting the presence of estrus and ovulation w… Show more

“…Spermatozoa remained viable for only 12 hours in the female reproductive tract, and the life span of the ovulated egg was limited to 12-24 hours (Yanagimachi, 2022). Estrus in goats lasted around 24-48 hours, in an average of 36 hours (Dávila et al, 2018). Ovulation could occur 9-72 hours after the onset of estrus.…”

“…The period of a female's life known as puberty marks the appearance of the first oestrus symptoms, which in nonpregnant animals indicate the start of cyclic ovarian activity (Greyling, 2000;García et al, 2023). Goats begin to go through puberty at the age of five months (Dávila et al, 2017). Both internal and external variables can affect a goat's age during puberty (Lestari and Ismudiono 2014).…”

“…proestrus, estrus, metestrus, and diestrus. The reproductive system begins to prepare for ovulation in the proestrus phase (Dávila et al, 2017). The metestrus phase is showed by the sudden cessation of the estrus phase, and the diestrus phase, shows the development of corpus luteum and progesterone production (Ismudiono et al, 2010).…”
