REPRODUCTION ASPECTS OF THE YELLOWFIN TUNA (Thunnus albacares)

Abstract: <p>Tuna is one of the important fishery commodities in Indonesia, including tuna caught by longliners in Indian Ocean. The most popular of tuna is yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares). Currently, the production of tuna based on the capture fisheries, therefore, in order to preserve its sustainability, the understanding of the biological and reproduction aspect is required. Research on the biological reproduction of this species was conducted at Gondol Research Institute for Mariculture. Samples of female g… Show more

“…The study conducted by Rohit et al (2012) on the east coast of India obtained yellowfin tuna length range between 20-185 cm FL, whereas in the Sea of Oman lengths ranged between 37-172 cm FL. Zuidare et al Andamari et al, 2012;Miazwir, 2012). The research in the Indian Ocean by Muhammad and Barata (2012) resulted in a positive allometric growth (b> 3).…”

“…The spawning period estimated in this study was found to be longer than in previous studies. In the tropical waters, yellowfin tuna spawns all year round [12,14,32]. The sea surface temperature is one of the main factors in fish spawning activity.…”

“…Yellowfin tuna is multiple spawners species with an asynchronous development and indeterminate fecundity type [4,9]. The spawning frequency of yellowfin tuna is around 1.5 days [10,11] throughout the year in a large area in the tropical zone [12][13][14]. In the Indian Ocean, spawning occurs from December to March in the equatorial region [15].…”

“…While yellowfin tuna aquaculture is also undertaken in regions such as Mexico, Panama, and Indonesia, the industry faces challenges related to the insufficient supply of wild fry [25]. Research on yellowfin tuna has covered various aspects, including stock assessment, fisheries, reproductive biology, and genomics [26][27][28][29][30]. Despite these extensive studies, the physiological response of yellowfin tuna to ammonia and nitrogen levels in artificial aquaculture environments remains largely unexplored.…”
