Reproducibility of regional lung ventilation distribution determined by electrical impedance tomography during mechanical ventilation

Abstract: Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) has the potential to become a new tool for bedside monitoring of regional lung ventilation. The aim of our study was to assess the reproducibility of regional lung ventilation distribution determined by EIT during mechanical ventilation under identical ventilator settings. The experiments were performed on 10 anaesthetized supine pigs ventilated in a volume-controlled mode. EIT measurements were performed with the Goe-MF II device (Viasys Healthcare, Höchberg, Germany) dur… Show more

“…The high reproducibility of this EIT measurement method has been reported previously (26). Measurements were performed using the Gottingen Goe-MF II electrical impedance tomograph (VIASYS Healthcare, Hochberg, Germany), delivering current injections through sixteen Ag/AgCI electrodes (Kendall, Kittycat 1,050NPSM, Tyco Healthcare group, Mansfield, MA) placed around the infants' chest at the level of the nipples.…”

“…For each scan, the amplitudes of relative impedance changes (rel.ΔZ) were calculated pixel-wise (matrix of 32 × 32) and normalized to obtain the percentaged distribution of Vt (15,16). Using an established approach, ventrodorsal profiles of regional percentaged Vt distribution were computed for all 32 horizontal layers (17,18). To present the changes in regional ventilation distribution between the different I:E ratios, regional ventilation difference profiles to I:E 1:4 were generated and the geometrical centers of ventilation (COVs) were assessed (19), representing the location of maximal ventilation within the anteroposterior chest diameter in percent.…”

“…Nevertheless, we were able to detect differences between preterm and termborn infants using AUC ant . In ventilated animals EIT has been shown to be highly reproducible [35], but no data on reproducibility or repeatability has been published so far for spontaneously breathing infants. We can clearly show an excellent shortterm repeatability making EIT a robust technique in the assessment of spontaneously breathing infants.…”
