Reproducibility of asbestos body counts in digestions of autopsy and surgical lung tissue

Abstract: Asbestos body counting by a single reader is a reliable method, especially at low concentrations of asbestos bodies in lung tissue. Double reading may be indicated in borderline cases with asbestos body levels close to levels of 1 000 AB/g.

“…However, induced passive or active smoking could further magnify the risk. 40 Velasco-Garcia et al 41 also echoed through their study that about 0.8975: 0.8029 for autopsy samples and 0.9592 for biopsy samples cases of lung cancer had more than 5000 asbestos particles per gram of dry lung cancer. In another similar study of textile workers, heavy exposure to various types of asbestos-like crocidolite showed that the RR of lung cancer risk significantly increased in periods after employment with a standardized mortality ratio of 302, 363, and 278, respectively.…”

“…134,136 These unsound restrictive pathology practices have resulted in declining many thousands of compensation claims of asbestos victims with significant financial savings for the manufacturers and users, particularly users of chrysotile asbestos. 111,112,134,[138][139][140][141][142][143][144][145][146] In recent years in Germany only 468 to 770 asbestos-related lung cancers per year were accepted although there were about 5,000 cases reported annually. These activities raise issues, not only relevant to Germany and other countries, but also relevant to the continuing widespread use of asbestos in some parts of the world and future compensation in many countries.…”

“…134,[138][139][140][141][142][143] Spain also has adopted fiber count criteria. 144,145 Switzerland, where there had been a considerable global asbestos cement industry, argued in 1975 that asbestosis should not be confirmed until asbestos was detected in lung tissues. 146 This has been further commented upon by Woitowitz.…”
