Reproducción del pez erizo, Diodon holocanthus (Pisces: Diodontidae) en la plataforma continental del Pacífico Central Mexicano

Abstract: Reproduction of the Spiny Puffer, Diodon holocanthus (Pisces: Diodontidae) in the continental shelf of Mexican Central Pacific. Diodon holocanthus is an important economic and ecological species of the demersal fish community, caught as bycatch from local shrimp fishery. The reproductive biology of this longspine porcupinefish has not yet been described, and reproductive season, the sex ratio, length distribution, length at first gonad maturity, and the gonad macro and microscopic features are described. A tot… Show more

“…In L. argentiventris, we identified seven stages of oocyte development, representing most of oogenesis. Other studies have also identified from five to seven stages in other species caught off the coast of Jalisco (Lucano-Ramírez et al 2001a, 2011a. Sánchez-Cárdenas et al (2011) described seven stages of oocyte development in Sphoeroides annulatus, similar to those observed in the present study.…”

“…There are two types of testicular development: lobular and tubular. Lobular development has been observed in L. peru (Lucano-Ramírez et al 2001a), D. holocanthus (Lucano-Ramírez et al 2011a), and S. sierra (Lucano-Ramírez et al 2011b) caught off the southern coast of Jalisco. Like Sánchez-Cárdenas et al (2011), we observed a main duct, located in the central part of each testis.…”

“…Among them, Diodon holocanthus is widely distribute in the tropical and warm waters of the Pacific, the Atlantic, and the Indian Ocean. D. holocanthus is a demersal fish species which can reproduce several times a year 3 and is of significant economic importance. The inflation mechanism, genome size variation, and genome evolution of pufferfish has been investigated 1,2,4,5 .…”
