“…The geometrical similarities of the secondary dunes on the South Falls sandbank and the dunes on the tidal ridge off the Jiangsu Coast are possibly due to the fact that they are at a scale which is sensitive to strong tidal flows (Ashley, 1990; Idier et al , 2004; Passchier and Kleinhans, 2005). Thus, both sites are characterized by macro‐tides, the tidal current velocity and tidal range being up to 2 m/s and 6 m, respectively (Le Bot and Trentesaux, 2004; Yu et al , 2012; Xiong et al , 2018). Such morphological comparisons may hence form the basis for future process‐based interpretations of the formation of differently scaled dunes.…”

“…The tidal ridges and swaths are aligned parallel to each other in a nearly east–west orientation, the depth range of the ridge‐swath system being 2–20 m (Figure 1b). It is characterized by large tidal ranges and strong tidal currents, up to 6 m and 2 m/s, respectively (Yu et al , 2012; Xiong et al , 2018). The 100 m × 400 m bathymetric domain (Figure 1b) is located on the northern slope of the ridge.…”

“…In summer, due to high runoff, a large amount of sediment is transported to the ocean through the estuary every year (Gao et al, ; Guo et al, ). The resuspension of seafloor sediments caused by storm waves in winter also leads to high turbidity near the estuary (Lu et al, ; Wen et al, ; Xiong et al, ). Therefore, different spatial turbidity patterns would be expected to occur in the Yellow River estuary in different months and seasons.…”
