Repressed Exercise-Induced Hepcidin Levels after Danggui Buxue Tang Supplementation in Male Recreational Runners

Abstract: This study was to investigate the protective and recovery effects of Danggui Buxue Tang (DBT) supplementation on exercise performance, hepcidin, iron status, and other related biochemical parameters after being challenged by a single bout of intense aerobic exercise. A total of 36 recreationally active males were pair-matched and randomly assigned to receive DBT or a placebo for 11 days, while using clusters based on their aerobic capacities. On the eighth day of the supplementation, the participants performed… Show more

“…On the other hand, the impact of acute exercise on the hemoglobin and hematocrit values remains unclear [61]. Most of the available studies, both clinical [61][62][63] and preclinical [64], reported transient decreases in these values due to plasma volume expansion, whereas others found no changes in them after exercise [65,66]. Here, probably due to the timing of sampling (16 h after the exercise bout), the protocol applied did not modify the blood erythrocyte counts, the hemoglobin concentration, or the hematocrit.…”

“…After 6 weeks of intensive exercise, trained rats had a higher number of blood leukocytes and, after exhaustion, there was a decrease in the erythrocyte counts and hemoglobin concentration, which could be due to the hemodilution induced by plasma volume expansion in the recovery period [ 57 ]. None of the experimental diets prevented the changes in red and white blood cells.…”

“…The main active ingredient is also identified as the water-soluble polysaccharide, and it has been prepared as an injectable dosage form (commercially available) [ 26 ] or coupled with iron complexes [ 27 ] for facilitating HGB recovery and better treatment. However, ASR and AR are more often prescribed in combination since according to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine, the recipe is able to deliver synergic efficacies by raising the “q” (vital energy) as well as nourishing the “blood” (body circulation) of a person [ 28 ]. Studies have shown that combined ASR and AR could stimulate the growth and inhibit the apoptosis of bone marrow stromal cells [ 15 , 29 ].…”
