Culture and culturally specific beliefs or practices may influence perceptions and decisions, potentially contributing to childhood obesity. The objective of this study is to identify the cultural factors (expressed through decisions, behaviors, individual experiences, perceptions, attitudes, or views) related to childhood and adolescent obesity in Mexico. Ten databases and one search engine were searched from 1995 onwards for qualitative studies. The Sunrise Enabler Model, described within the Cultural Care Theory, guided this review. Sample, the phenomenon of interest, study design, and evaluation data were extracted, and the Critical Appraisals Skills Programme tool was used to assess the quality of the included studies. Twenty-four studies were included. Of these, 12 studies included children or adolescents, 12 included parents, eight included schoolteachers, four included school staff (other than teachers), four included food vendors, and one included policymakers. Cultural values, beliefs, lifeways (especially food and food costumes), kinship, and social factors (particularly immediate and extended family) strongly influenced childhood and adolescent obesity-related lifestyles in Mexico. Most cultural factors related to childhood obesity in Mexico identified in this review may be modifiable and amenable to practical interventions.

“…[35] The improvement in PCCN according to the self-perception of the caregivers in this study could have enhanced its performance, given that the perception of internal locus of control and self-efficacy are associated with better practices of self-care, adherence to treatment and healthy lifestyles according to reports from other studies in that sense. [36][37][38][39][40] In some meta-analysis successful interventions were reported to increase intake of fruit and vegetables, the time and quality of physical activity, improvement in anthropometric measures, the common strategy was the development of parental abilities. Objective: To assess the effect of the program “Foundations for a healthy life” on parental competence for correct nutrition and on nutritional status of malnourished grade 1 children on a program of nutritional recovery with Amaranth.Methods: Design: Before-after study with intervention and follow up, from June 2015 to November 2017. Instruments: Scale Seca 700, stadiometer Seca 220, Reminder 24 hours and Self-perception of Parental Competence Tool. Setting: Ministry of Health: Nutritional Recovery Program. Participants: Intervention group: Twenty-six dyads caregiver-malnourished grade one children; Control group: Thirty-two malnourished grade one children. Intervention: “Foundations for a healthy life” program. Variables: Nutritional status, parental competence, Kilocalories, macronutrients, fruit and vegetables. Analysis: Wilcoxon and t student tests, Relative Risk, 95% CI, significance p ≤ .05.Results: Intervention vs control group: normalization on the nutritional status 63% vs 29% (p ≤ .05). Caloric adequacy 27% to 81% and protein adequacy 23% to 58%, increased intake of fruits and vegetables. Caregivers trained was associated with the improvement of the nutritional status of the children: post-intervention third month (RR 2.27, 95% CI, p ≤ .05).Conclusions and Implications: The program was effective in improving nutritional status and PCCN by continuing for three months. It is recommended follow-up six months to verify development of new habits.

ANTECEDENTES: la prevalencia de la lactancia materna en prematuros mexicanos es baja, a pesar de ser una medida accesible y de bajo costo recomendada por la Organización Mundial de la Salud. Uno de os factores de abandono es la percepción de baja producción láctea. OBJETIVO: comparar las representaciones maternas de salud y lactancia en hijos prematuros internados en hospitales de referencia, en tanto certificado o no como Hospital Amigo del Niño y de la Madre.MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: estudio cualitativo efectuado en dos hospitales de referencia: uno de ellos certificado como amigo del niño y la madre (17 madres y 1 padre de prematuros) y otro no certificado (13 madres). Instrumento de recolección: guía de entrevista semiestructurada que se realizó cara a cara por personal capacitado. Se aplicó análisis de contenido temático a las comunicaciones hasta aprehender las representaciones de acuerdo con el objetivo. Se obtuvo la aprobación de los comités de ética de cada hospital y los participantes firmaron el consentimiento informado. RESULTADOS: se aprehendieron tres representaciones: 1) la saludcorporalidad del hijo prematuro internado; 2) elegir el mejor alimento la leche materna versus fórmula para el hijo prematuro y 3) las informaciones recibidas sobre lactancia materna.CONCLUSIONES: la salud del hijo prematuro se representa en la corporalidad, principalmente el peso. En las representaciones maternas se manifestó la construcción de conocimiento de la leche como alimento “bueno”, que les permitió optar, inicialmente, por alimentar al hijo con su leche. La percepción de producción insuficiente, la creencia de que la leche materna daña, la actividad laboral materna y la prescripción de sucedáneos posibilita el abandono de la lactancia materna. En el Hospital Amigo del Niño y de la Madre se denotó sistematización en pro de la lactancia, con personal e infraestructura asignados a esa labor; en el hospital no certificado se denotaron solamente acciones informativas verbales o gráficas.
