Representaciones Sociales De La Contaminación Del Aire Y Las Estufas De Leña en Diferentes Niveles Socioeconómicos De La Ciudad De Temuco, Chile

Show more

“…Some studies have shown that the resistance offered by residents to public policies pushing for a replacement of firewood stoves with other types of fuel is due to the positive positioning of people towards the heat produced by firewood fires. This is associated with feelings of comfort, happiness, and warmth, as well as positive nostalgic feelings towards childhood and past family activities around firewood fires (Álvarez Escobar and Boso Gaspar 2018; Reeve et al 2013). Open fires are usually places for gathering and communicating with “other” non-humans (such as relatives, ancestors, animals, energies, objects, and plants), where the shapes of the smoke and the ways of crackling and “talking” about the fire are “signs” through which humans and non-humans dialogue and can, for example, prevent some danger, the arrival of a relative or anticipate the rains of summer (Pazzarelli 2016; Rodriguez, Aguirre and Babot 2022).…”

“…This is consistent with our results observed in the previous mobile monitoring study 71 and the kriging analyses 52 that suggested a possible spatial clustering. When comparing the ratio maps, the levoglucosan/PM 2.5 ratio showed higher values in the borders and zones with slightly lower SES, which can be related to preference for wood for heating their houses 110 and the use of lower-quality stoves making the combustion more inefficient. On the other hand, higher K sol /PM 2.5 ratio was observed in some western zones, where there is higher SES and lower altitude.…”

“…111 Other public measures might require subsidizing the exchange of wood burners for cleaner energy alternatives, especially for the more deprived population, which in turn might be those heavily relying on wood as a fuel source constrained by energy fuel poverty. 110 Regarding the number of sites used, some authors have found that R 2 could overestimate the predictive ability of the model in complex urban structures when the number of sites are small to moderate (20−60 sites); 18,89,112 however, only a few studies had included 80 or more sites. 97,108,113 Previous wood-burning LUR models with fixed campaigns have included a different number of sampling sites; for instance, 16 sites in the Netherlands (Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Groningen, Amersfoort), 19 in Oslo, 20 in Munich/Augsburg, 40 in Catalonia (Barcelona, Girona, Sabadell), 9 23 in Hyderabad, 107 108 in Seattle.…”
