Repositioning of the bone window in lateral sinus floor elevation with simultaneous implant placement: A retrospective radiographic study

Abstract: Objectives: To retrospectively evaluate whether repositioning the bone window leads to a better outcome of three-dimensional sinus augmentation in lateral sinus floor elevation (LSFE) with simultaneous implant placement. Methods: 34 patients with a total of 40 implants (14: test group, 26: control group) receiving LSFE with simultaneous implant placement were included in this retrospective research. CBCT images were taken before surgery, immediately and 6 months after surgery. The two-dimensional augmentation p… Show more

“…Implant survival and ossification of sinus bone grafts may be enhanced when the lateral access opening sites are covered with barrier membranes or repositioned using a bony window [34,35]. However, controversial opinions suggest that there are no significant differences in implant treatment outcomes after MSFA, with or without coverage of the lateral windows, although a higher percentage of newly formed bone was detected in the coverage group [36].…”

“…The data of pre‐surgery was set as a fixed volume, and the others, defined as moving volumes, were set to match with the pre‐surgery one. Then, the margin of the augmented bone was drawn manually every 0.3 mm at the coronal plane (Wang et al., 2022) and filled (green region). The implant area was segmented by the typical threshold (yellow region) and cut off from the green region.…”

“…The residual bone height (RBH) was determined as the distance from the alveolar crest to the maxillary sinus floor in the preoperative CBCT. Endo‐sinus bone gain (ESBG) was determined as the distance from the level of the sinus floor to the top of the grated materials along the central axis of the implant [5,13]. The apical bone height (ABH) was defined as the distance from the implant apex to the top of the grated materials along the central axis of the implant.…”
