EinleitungDie Idee, die Mengenlehre kategoriell zu charakterisieren, geht auf Lawvere [5] zurtick. Dort wird eine elementare Theorie mit kategoriellen Grundbegriffen angegeben, deren (kategoriell) vollst~indigen Modelle zur Kategorie aller Mengen ~iquivalent sind. Der wirkliche Durchbruch der kategoriellen Mengenlehre wurde jedoch erst durch neue Begriffe und Methoden erm6glicht, die Lawvere u. Tierney in ihrer Theorie elementarer Topoi entwickelten (vgl. [7]). Daraufhin konnte die Kategorie der Mengen als ein spezieller Topos elementar charakterisiert werden (Cole [2], Mitchell [8], Osius [9]), and wit wollen hier zeigen, dab sich die Kategorie der Klassen ebenfalls elementar charakterisieren l~igt, wobei wir wie folgt vorgehen. Zuerst erl~iutem wir die elementare Theorie CAT abstrakter Kategorien aus [6] und setzen dann die elementare Kategorientheorie voraus (man vgl. z. B. Pumpltin [10], Schubert [12]). Dann w~ihlen wir eine f'tir unsere Zwecke besonders geeignete Variante NB der yon Neumann-Bemays-G6delschen Mengenlehre, und zwar handelt es sich um eine Mischung der in Bernays [1], G6del [3], Rubin [tl] dargestellten Systerne ohne Fundierungs-und Auswahlaxiome (die man jedoch hinzuftigen kann) und mit ,,Urelementen" (die man auch fortlassen kann).Die Grundbegriffe yon CAT lassen sich in natiJrlicher Weise in der Mengenlehre NB interpretieren und liefern die Kategorie ABB aller Klassen und Abbildungen, die wir dann elementar charakterisieren wollen. Hierzu z~ihlen wir einige Eigenschaften der Kategorie ABB auf und erhalten durch Hinzuf'tigen der entsprechenden Axiome zur Theorie CAT die elementare Theorie CAT-ABB (die hierbei wesentlichen Begriffe des Klassifikators yon partiellen Abbildungen und Unterobjekten gehen auf Lawvere u. Tierney [7] zurtick).Dann wird gezeigt, dab man auch die Grundbegriffe der Mengenlehre NB -analog zu [5] -in CAT-ABB interpretieren kann, so dab alle NB-Axiome gelten. Die ,,kategorielle Gleichwertigkeit" der Theo-* HieriJber wurde erstmals auf dem Midwest Category Seminar, Ztirich 1971, vorgetragen.
