ObjectiveThe discriminative and predictive power of the Eyberg Child Behavior Inventory (ECBI) was assessed using revised clinical cut-off scores. Sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive power were calculated to evaluate the effectiveness of the revised score in screening children for treatment of disruptive behavior problems. SampleParticipants were drawn from archival samples of 196 children aged 3-6 whose mothers had completed an ECBI. The disruptive behavior group (n = 98) consisted of children referred for psychological treatment who met diagnostic criteria for Oppositional Defiant Disorder or Conduct Disorder. The non-diagnosed group (n = 98) consisted of children visiting pediatric clinics whose mothers did not check the box on their demographic information questionnaire endorsing the presence of behavior problems. DesignChildren in the non-diagnosed group were selected to match the disruptive behavior group on socio-economic status, age, and sex. The mothers' scores on the ECBI Intensity Scale were used to calculate the sensitivity and specificity, positive and negative predictive power, and kappa of the ECBI. ResultsThe ECBI Intensity Scale correctly classified 91% of the children, with 96% of the diagnosed children correctly classified and 87% of the non-diagnosed children correctly classified. Implications forThis study further validates the ECBI for use as a screening measure for practice children in pediatric settings who require further evaluation or treatment for disruptive behavior problems.

We wished to (a) determine the ability of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R) to discriminate between patients with epilepsy of left or right temporal lobe (LTLE, RTLE) origin and (b) examine the ability of Kaufman's (1990) WAIS-R short forms to estimate actual Full-Scale IQ (FSIQ). We administered the WAIS-R to 215 nonretarded, left hemisphere dominant patients with invasively verified epilepsy of unilateral TL origin without lesions demonstrated by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (excluding mesial temporal sclerosis, MTS). LTLE (n = 106) and RTLE (n = 109) groups were compared on the WAIS-R subtests and summary IQ scores. Verbal-Performance IQ (VIQ-PIQ) discrepancies of various magnitudes, and Verbal Comprehension (VC) and Perceptual Organization (PO) scores derived by factor analysis. The LTLE group scored significantly lower on the Vocabulary subtest, and none of the other indexes reliably distinguished LTLE from RTLE patients. The Kaufman 2, 3, and 4 subtest short forms were significant predictors of FSIQ, with the 4 subtest short form having the highest correlation and lowest error of estimate.

In this study, we investigate the reliability, validity, and diagnostic efficiency of the Rorschach Schizophrenia Index (SCZI) in relation to the accurate identification of patients diagnosed with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed. [DSM-IV], American Psychiatric Association, 1994) schizophrenia or other psychotic disorder (PD) according to the methodological recommendations offered by Wood, Nezworski, and Stejskal (1996). Seventy-eight patients who were found to meet DSM-IV criteria for a PD or Axis II disorder (PD = 33; borderline personality disorder = 23; Cluster A personality disorders = 9; Cluster C personality disorders = 13) and 50 nonclinical participants were compared on the SCZI. The results of this study indicate that the SCZI is internally consistent and can be reliably scored. In addition, the SCZI was used effectively in differentiating PD patients from patients with an Axis II disorder and from the participants in the nonclinical sample. Also, the SCZI variable was found to be empirically related to the presence of a DSM-IV diagnosis of PD. Finally, this variable could be employed for classification purposes in ways that were clinically meaningful in the diagnosis of a PD. Conceptual and methodological issues are discussed in relation to the assessment of psychosis.
