Background Low back pain is one of the most prevalent musculoskeletal conditions and the most common cause of disability. Hairdressers are one of the high-risk professionals for work-related musculoskeletal disorders like low back pain. However, studies on the prevalence and associated factors of low back pain among hairdressers are scarce. The objective of the current study is to assess the magnitude and associated factors of work related low back pain among hairdressers working in female beauty salons.Method An institutional-based cross-sectional study was employed from January 05 up to February 28, 2018. The sample (n=344) hairdressers were selected randomly from all-female beauty salons of Mekelle city. A structured questionnaire adapted from a standardized Nordic questionnaire and other similar studies was used. Binary logistic regression analysis was performed to identify factors associated with low back pain. The Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) with a 95% Confidence Interval (CI) was estimated to show the strength of association. A p-value of < 0.05 was used to declare statistical significance.Result A total of 314 hairdressers participated, with a 91.3% response rate. The study found that the self-reported 12 months prevalence of work related low back pain was (47.5%) with 95%CI (41.8- 53.1). Awkward way working posture [AOR: 2.6, 95%CI (1.41- 4.62)], working greater than 4 days in a week [AOR: 7.98, 95%CI (2.54-25.09], hair washing job category [AOR: 4.35, 95%CI (1.87-10.12)], having adjustable washing basin [AOR: 0.30, 95%CI (0.151-0.587)] and job stress [AOR: 2.75, 95%CI (1.61-4.72)] were factors that shows a statically significant association with low back pain.Conclusion This study found that work-related low back pain is a major health problem among hairdressers.Working in awkward postures, more working days per week, hair washing job category and job stress show strong association with work related low back pain, whereas using adjustable height washing basin has a protective effect for low back pain. Responsible bodies need to give attention to prevent low back pain among hairdressers by giving on job training related to comfortable working posture and utilization of ergonomically designed tools.

Objectives: This study has investigated the prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs), the most commonly affected body parts, the risk factors of WMSDs and the coping strategies adopted by hairdressers. Material and Methods: The study design was a cross-sectional descriptive survey design. Two hundred and ninety-nine hairdressers (242 females and 57 males) from salons in Surulere and Mushin Local Government Areas of Lagos State completed a 27-item questionnaire. They were selected using a non-probability consecutive sampling technique. The inferential analysis was conducted using the Chi 2 test. The level of significance stood at p < 0.05. Results: The 12-month prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders stood at 75.6%. Two hundred and twenty-one (91.3%) participants reported gradual onset of musculoskeletal disorders. One hundred and sixteen (47.9%) participants had the onset of the WMSDs at the age range of 26-35 years. The most commonly affected body parts included the low back (76.3%), shoulder (62.5%) and neck (46.3%). Some of the major job risk factors of the WMSDs that were identified included: working in the same position for long periods and attending to a large number of customers in 1 day. Taking sufficient rest breaks by participants was one of the coping strategies adopted by the participants. The mean number of years of working experience was 7.85±0.4 years. One hundred and twenty-four (41.5%) participants had worked for 1-5 years. The Chi 2 analysis showed that the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders were significantly associated with the age of a participant (Chi 2 = 78.78, p = 0.001), years of working experience (Chi 2 = 78.03, p = 0.001) and hours spent working in a standing position (Chi 2 = 8.77, p = 0.01), respectively. Conclusions: The age of hairdressers, their years of working and the long hours they spent working in a standing position may be significant factors that contribute to the high prevalence of the WMSDs among them. The most commonly affected body parts included the low back, shoulders and neck.

Dermatitis as an inflammatory skin disorder is characterized by erythema and scaling of the cutaneous surface of the body. The pattern of occurrence differs across the ages and varies in different parts of the body. The records of all patients with a diagnosis of dermatitis presenting to the dermatologic clinic of Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Irrua Edo State Nigeria over a ten years period between April 2005 and April 2015 were reviewed and analyzed retrospectively and subjected to simple statistical analysis. One thousand six hundred and twenty patients (1620) with various types of dermatitis were seen during this period representing 22% of all dermatologic presentations. Among the different types of dermatitis encountered, atopic dermatitis accounted for the highest prevalence at 28.1% occurring equally in the young and the old, followed by contact dermatitis occurring in 18.2% of the patients (mainly in young adults). Those with the lowest prevalence were stasis dermatitis (2.4%) and asteatotic eczema (3.6%) both occurring majorly in the elderly. Seborrhoiec dermatitis (8%) and onchodermatitis (5%) were the major infective dermatitis found. The spread of dermatitis in a tropical dermatology practice from this study varies greatly among different age groups and several factors such as inherent immunity and various environmental conditions from activities of daily living are responsible for these and the knowledge of this variation may help to exclude other lesions such as psoriasis and drug eruptions which can present with a similar clinical picture.
