Reported effects of rapid prototyping on industrial software quality

Abstract: Empirical data is required to determine the effect of rapid prototyping on software quality. We examine 34 published and unpublished case studies of the use of rapid prototyping in "real world" software development. We identify common observations, unique events, and opinions. We develop guidelines to help software developers use rapid prototyping to maximize product quality and avoid common pitfalls.

“…By contrast, almost all contexts in class J (prototyping) use the same formulaic 'sound bite' concerning the fallacy of delivering the first version of the system: Also, the habit of going through the stages several times has not caught on in spite of Brooks' advice: 'Plan to throw one away; you will, anyhow'. [49] Both Cozzens [11] and Hargens [12] reported changes in context content over time. In one neuropharmacology article, Cozzens showed that early citations included details of methodology and findings while later citations focused primarily on the main 'knowledge claim' -the brain has opiate receptors -without mentioning the details.…”

“…One dimension along which methods have been empirically compared involves contrasting traditional methodologies to more iterative methodologies such as "rapid application development" [3] and agile methods [4]. Although much of the research comparing the two broad methodologies is anecdotal [5], there is empirical support indicating that the use of more iterative methods can result in improved outcomes such as a faster development process, better user satisfaction, and higher system quality (although results are mixed, see [6]).…”
