“…In terms of biostratigraphy, this work confirms the occurrence of the index-species A. puzosianum at the base of the "Heteroceras horizon", as originally reported by Masse (1976 (Reboulet et al 2014) (see ). Following Masse and Fenerci-Masse (2011), we agree that the deepening event is coeval with the "Heteroceras marls" episode sensu Paquier (1900), recorded in the nearby Vocontian Basin, and dated to the boundary between the G. sartousiana Zone and the I. giraudi Zone (Bert et al 2008).…”

“…However, this heteroceratid assemblage is only known from a very limited number of specimens, together with ancyloceratids of the genus Pseudocrioceras Spath, 1924 which also dominate this interval. It should be noted that the validity of the P. waagenoides Subzone has been much debated because this genus is considered to be spatially restricted to the proximal margins of Tethyan basins (Bert et al 2008;Reboulet et al 2006Reboulet et al , 2011Reboulet et al , 2014. Our investigation of a laterally equivalent upper Barremian section in the vicinity of Marseille (Bouchesdu-Rhône, France) has revealed new heteroceratids-rich assemblages in the deepening succession.…”

“…With ref er ence to the pub lished data re gard ing Late Hauterivian ammonite biostratigraphy (e.g., Vermeulen et al, 2002;Com pany et al, 2003Com pany et al, , 2005Vermeulen, 2004;Reboulet et al, 2014) and biostratigraphy and se quence stra tig ra phy (Hoedemaeker, 2002(Hoedemaeker, , 2003(Hoedemaeker, , 2013 with re spect to the de tailed stra tig ra phy of the sec tions stud ied, we have in clined to the adop tion of the rel a tively sim ple ammonite zonation as proposed by Hoedemaeker (2013) for the Up per Hauterivian in the sec tions at Río Argos. This shows the fol low ing ammonite zones in se quence: Ligatus, Balearis, Ohmi and Catulloi.…”

“…In the Lower Cre ta ceous of the Med i ter ra nean area, the pseudothurmanniid ammonites are sig nif i cant within the Up per Hauterivian, ammonite zones and subzones based on their occur rence (e.g., Com pany et al, 2003;Vermeulen, 2004;Hoedemaeker, 2013;Reboulet et al, 2014). These ammonites were as so ci ated with a pe lagic ma rine en vi ron ment, and can be found mainly in the deep-wa ter de pos its of the con ti nen tal slope.…”
