Report on the 13th International Society of Blood Transfusion Platelet Immunology Workshop

Abstract: The sensitivity of the MR-MAIPA compared favourably with that of the in-house methods. Most laboratories were able to identify anti-HPA-1a alone in Sample 1 but more than half of the participants were not able to correctly assign the specificity of all HPA antibodies present in the second sample. The usefulness of the panel of freeze-dried platelets varied considerably between laboratories.

“…The efforts to rule out HPA‐15 alloantibodies and to standardise an efficient detection technique should be strong because of its clinical relevance. The report on the 13th International Society of Blood Transfusion Platelet Immunology Workshop highlighted the persistence of variability between laboratories even though it has been reduced compared to previous years (Foxcroft et al ., 2007).…”

“…In another article in this edition, Foxcroft et al . [7] report the results of an international workshop exercise where an identical, shortened MAIPA assay was used by all participants and yet different results were still obtained. This would seem to indicate that the differences in reactivity are due to a combination of factors, each of which individually has little or no effect, or are due to laboratory expertise.…”

“…Methods for the desiccation and dry storage of human cells (RBCs, platelets, stem cells, and gametes) are not still available for clinical applications [28, 29]. However, freeze-dried cells have been used for some diagnostic applications [30, 31] and as biological controls for cell counting in blood cell analyzers and for flow cytometry assays [32]. …”
