Report of a case: Retroperitoneal mucinous cystadenocarcinoma with rapid progression

Abstract: HighlightsA very rare case of large retroperitoneal mucinous cystadenocarcinoma and little-known clinical course of the disease is reported. The disease took unexpectedly aggressive progression despite the small portion of adenocarcinoma for the multiple and large cysts.Informative findings in imaging of primary retroperitoneal mucinous cyst adenocarcinoma, and impressive imaging after recurrence are presented.

“…In this setting, the most common approach was the rescue surgery (5 patients) [15,17,21,22,30]; 2 women were treated with chemo-radiotherapy instead (table 2) [3,59]. After the progression of the metastatic disease, some authors re-operated their patients [15,21], others administered a hormonal treatment [21,22] like tamoxifen or chemotherapy (table 2) [21,30,59].…”

“…Exclusion criteria were articles not written in English, abstract only and those that were not relevant. If the full text was not free or available or missing additional data were needed, the corresponding author was asked to send it; only two answered (Kamiyama et al [3] and Kessler et al [33]) and their additional information were included in this review. The study population was limited to patients with primary retroperitoneal cystadenocarcinoma and people with benignant tumours were excluded.…”

“…However, those with PRMC that includes anaplastic carcinoma and sarcoma components tend to have a poor prognosis. PubMed searches using the keywords “primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystadenocarcinoma” revealed a case report of bone metastasis after tumor resection ( 21 ); however, there were no cases of bone invasion at the time of tumor detection. Therefore, this is the first reported case of PRMC with adjacent bone invasion and distant metastases at the time of detection.…”

“…Stereotactic irradiation had no effect and the patient died after another 7 months. 11 Zanoni et al reported stereotactic irradiation of a peripancreatic recurrence. 12 The peripancreatic lesion remained stable, but progression occurred at other sites.…”
