Reply to W. Anfiloff by the author

Abstract

The remarks of Anfiloff are clearly designed, not, as he claims in his opening paragraph, to narrow the gulf between the inversion and forward modeling approaches to interpretation, but instead to attempt to completely discredit the inversion philosophy, culminating in two somewhat emotional paragraphs. This threatens to be a greater hindrance to the ultimate aim of best possible interpretation than any shortcomings of current inversion methods. Modern inversion techniques are not “smart” algorithms for “hands‐off” automatic interpretation as Anfiloff suggests.
