“…This assertion is valid during the wet season, but as observed in the dry season in this study, P. phaseoloides was not very effective in suppressing C. odorata, probably due to its slow growth during the dry period (Tian et al 2001) which prevented a complete ground cover. Most grasses are susceptible to shading (Shetty et al 1982;Ng et al 1997) and therefore with the climbing habit of P. phaseoloides, the grasses were not able to survive, thus explaining their extremely low mass despite the varying climatic conditions. The inter-row spacing of 3 m between the hedgerows was an appropriate spacing usually employed in alley cropping (Kang 1993) but due to compact growth habit of F. macrophylla, a suitable micro-environment was created for the grasses through unhindered light penetration into the alleys.…”
