Elucidating the structure of Aβ 1-40 fibrils is of interest in Alzheimer's disease research because it is required for designing therapeutics that target Aβ 1-40 fibril formation at an early stage of the disease. M35 is a crucial residue because of its potential oxidation and its strong interactions across β-strands and across β-sheets in Aβ fibrils. Experimentally, data for the three-fold symmetry structure of the Aβ 9-40 fibril suggest formation of tight hydrophobic core through M35 interactions across the fibril axis and strong I31-V39 interactions between different cross-β units. Herein, based on experimental data, we probe conformers with three-fold symmetry of the fulllength Aβ 1-40 . Our all-atom molecular dynamics simulations in explicit solvent of conformers based on the ssNMR data reproduced experimental observations of M35-M35 and I31-V39 distances. Our interpretation of the experimental data suggests that the observed ~5-7Å M35-M35 distance in the fibril three-fold symmetry structure is likely to relate to M35 interactions along the fibril axis, rather than across the fibril axis, since our measured M35-M35 distances across the fibril axis are consistently above 15Å. Consequently, we revealed that the unique Aβ 1-40 triangular structure has a large cavity along the fibril axis and that the N-termini can assist in the stabilization of the fibril by interacting with the U-turn domains or with the C-termini domains. Our findings, together with the recent cyroEM characterization of the hollow core in Aβ 1-42 fibrils, point to the relevance of a cavity in Aβ 1-40/1-42 oligomers which should be considered when targeting oligomer toxicity.

We report the investigation of surface plasmon induced enhancement of homogeneous and heterogeneous triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA) by gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Results show that AuNPs enhance the overall efficiency in both cases. Excitation rate and intersystem crossing efficiency of the sensitizer, and efficiency of energy transfer between sensitizer and acceptor are believed to be enhanced by the surface plasmon of AuNPs, leading to the enhancement of overall TTA efficiency.

The hybrid use of dissimilar lightweight materials, such as aluminum alloy and advanced high strength steel (AHSS), has become a critical approach to reduce the weight of ground transportation vehicles. Self-piercing riveting (SPR) as a preferred cold-forming fastening method is facing problems like weak interlocking and insufficient penetration, due to ihe reduced formability of AHSS. In this paper, a new process named electroplastic self-piercing riveting (EP-SPR) was proposed to reduce the deformation resistance of AHSS DP780, by applying a direct current (dc) to it during the riveting process. The infiuence ofdc on force and displacement characteristics throughout the riveting process, joint physical attributes and quasi-static performances for two sheet combinations, e.g., AA6061-T6 to DP780 (combination 1) and DP780 to AA6061-T6 (combination 2), were studied and compared with the traditional SPR joints. The results showed that compared with the traditionai SPR joints, the EP-SPR ones increased by 12.5% and 23.3% in tensile-shear strength and cross-tension strengths for combination I, respectively. For combination 2, even though the EP-SPR joints decreased by 5.8% in tensile-shear strength, it could reduce the penetration risk of bottom AA6061-T6, and present a better energy absorption capability for the increased undercut amount. In addition, the corresponding cross-tension strength of EP-SPR joints still increases by 6.1%.
