“…(2013) tested a collar prototype with repellents identified on the non-host Kobus defassa by Gikonyo et al (2003) in association with a synthetic repellent against Glossinamorsitans.A 90% reduction in the transmission of trypanosomiasis was observed after the use of this prototype.Refinement of the blend constituents showed the potential to deploy the repellent-based technology to protect cattle from tsetse and the risk of exposure toTrypanosomespp. (Bett et al, 2015). Pageat (2005)reported the presence of allomonesbis(2-ethylhexyll) adipate and 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol diisobutyratefromthe secretion of uropygialgland of ducks that repel red poultry mites, Dermanyssusgallinae, and a product comprising these compounds is being manufactured and distributed in Francefor use in the control of D. gallinae onpoultry farms.…”

“…Furthermore, individual signal components emitted by each host can act synergisticallyor can exert antagonism to other ectoparasites (Nielsen et al, 2015;Weldon, 2010).For example, ablend of volatiles produced by the non-host waterbuck, Kobus defassa, was identified as being repellent to tsetse flies, Glossinamorsitans, (Bett et al, 2015;Gikonyo et al, 2002;Gikonyo et al, 2003). However, little is known about host natural odors that are repellent for ticks.…”

“…δ-Octalactone with a six-membered ring and a propyl (CH 3 CH 2 CH 2 ) side chain at δ position was previously shown to be an important repellent component of waterbuck, a tsetse-refractory member of the related wildlife (Bett et al, 2015). In the present study, the effects of two structural features of the compound, ring size and the length of the side chain, on the responses of G. pallidipes and G. m. morsitans were first studied in a 2-choice wind tunnel.…”

“…The effects of δ-octalactone and δ-nonalactone with/without 4-methylguaiacol on G. pallidipes catches in NG2G traps baited with acetone (~500mg/h) and fermented cow urine (1000mg/h) (Brightwell et al, 1991) were evaluated in the field in randomized Latin squares design (5 targets × 5 sites × 5 days) arrangement (Mireji et al, 2003; Bett et al, 2015). The traps were deployed in clearings about 300m apart.…”
