Repeated photoswitching performance of azobenzenes adsorbed on gold surfaces: a balance between space, intermolecular interactions, and phase separation

Abstract: A delicate balance between space, intermolecular interactions, and phase separation plays an important role in forming repeatedly photoswitchable monolayers.

“…The repetition of trans – cis isomerisation has caused random reorientation and arrangements of the chromophores. 30 As a result, there is a considerable amount of alterations to sticker/coating interactions and consequently, the sticker peeled itself off slowly from the coating film surface. Furthermore, the proposed peeling-off mechanism is in agreement with the results of static contact angle measurements.…”

“…Based on a previous report, 20 the orientation of azobenzene moieties in liquid-crystalline films greatly influenced the surface polarity. Another investigation 30 demonstrated that repeated irradiation of well-ordered azobenzene-containing SAMs with UV and visible light led to the random reorientation and arrangement of azobenzene chromophores.…”

“…Supramolecular structures formed by the self-assembly of such linear azobenzene chromophores underwent dynamic switching between two states in the early stage of light irradiation. However, a gradual decline in the photoswitching performance was observed with increasing number of repeated irradiation cycles [16,17]. In this study, to realize micrometer-sized spheres capable of repeated and stable photoswitching, we synthesized a star-shaped azobenzene chromophore (3Az, see Scheme 1) in which three ortho-dialkylated azobenzenes are linked to a central phenyl ring via ester bridges.…”

“…We recently synthesized linear ortho-dialkylated azobenzene chromophores that show a high yield of trans ↔ cis photoisomerization and a long-lived cis state over a period of several weeks [15][16][17]. Supramolecular structures formed by the self-assembly of such linear azobenzene chromophores underwent dynamic switching between two states in the early stage of light irradiation.…”
