Worldwide, stroke is the leading cause of mortality and disability, with hypertension being an independent risk factor for a secondary stroke. Acupuncture for the treatment of hypertension gains more attention in alternative and complementary medicine, but the results are inconsistent. Few studies regarding the secondary prevention of stroke by managing hypertension with acupuncture have been carried out as there are some problems regarding the antihypertensive drug status in the secondary prevention of stroke. Still, the potential of acupuncture in regulating the blood pressure for secondary stroke prevention deserves our focus. This review is based on papers recorded in the PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases, from their inception until March 28, 2017, and retrieved with the following search terms: hypertension and acupuncture, limited in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs), stress-induced (or cold-induced) hypertensive or pre-hypertensive models. We find that, in these hypertensive animals, acupuncture could mainly influence factors related to the nervous system, oxidative stress, the endocrine system, cardiovascular function, and hemorheology, which are closely associated with the stroke outcome. This trend may give us a hint that acupuncture might well participate in the secondary prevention of stroke through these pathways when used in the management of hypertension.

Hypertension becomes a major public health problem due to its high prevalence and serious complications. The complementary therapies of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) play important roles in hypertension treatment. This study analyzed the application of the TCM external therapy and food therapy by text mining. Subsequently, suitable techniques and methods which were frequently used on hypertension treatment were explored. The text mining results showed that acupuncture, massage, Tuina, auricular-plaster and external application of Chinese herb medicine(CHM) were the top 5 TCM external therapy techniques, while placenta, lily root, pseudoginseng, peanut, sea horse, wine, radix aconiti carmichaeli, lemon, soybean and fructus crataegi were the top 10 foods used for hypertension treatment. The combinations of external therapy techniques were demonstrated in network, so does the combinations of the foods. The results provided good references for both clinical practice and medical research.

Apelin is a recently described endogenous peptide and its receptor APJ, is a member of the G protein-coupled receptors family. Apelin and APJ are widely distributed in central and peripheral tissues exert important biological effects on cardiovascular system. Recent studies have suggested that apelin/APJ system involves in decreasing the blood pressure and have a close relationship with hypertension, presumably, pathophysiology of hypertension as well. Such as, apelin/APJ system may be concerned in hyperfunction of the sympathetic nervous system, renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, endothelial injury, excessive endothelin, sodium retention, vascular remodeling, insulin resistance elicit hypertension, as well as in hypertension-induced organ damaged. Meanwhile, on the ground of the variation of apelin level in hypertension therapeutic process and combining with the recently researches on APJ agonist and antagonist, we could infer that apelin/APJ system would be a promising therapeutic target for hypertension and other cardiovascular disease in the future. However, the role of apelin on these pathogenic conditions was not consistent, consequently, the contradictory role of apelin on these pathogenesis of hypertension would be discussed in this article.
