“…Alternatively, cryotherapy may reduce HPV acquisition by reducing cervical ectopy [20,21], which is highly associated with HPV infection and may specifically increase the risk of infection with HPV types in the α9 clade, such as HPV16 [22-24]. Further, by targeting the cervical transformation zone, where lesions usually arise [25], cryotherapy may directly destroy cells harboring latent infections.…”

“…Instead of using the same cryoprobe for different sizes of cervix and lesions with a freeze, thaw, freeze technique until ice ball formation occurs, we used different sizes of cryoprobe, according to the size of the cervix or HPV lesion, for a fixed duration of five minutes because of our success in treating cervical ectopy 3 . Colposcopic and histological observations have shown that the healing process of cervical ectopy is achieved completely by metaplasia of the mucous membrane to squamous epithelium within two to ten weeks after cryotherapy 4 . We therefore examined the cervix clinically after 12 weeks and colposcopy was carried out after 24 weeks when the cervix had healed up.…”

“…4,5 ACOG recommends all females who have been sexually active or have reached 18yrs , an annual pap smear test and pelvic examination should be done.As the disease takes 10 -20 years to progress from preinvasive to invasive disease , preventive measures such as screening and treatment modalities should be adopted. 6,7 The specificity of cytology is 98% ,sensitivity is 57%, false negative rate is 49%. This can be reduced by liquid based cytology.…”
